I just got back from 10 days skiing in Jackson. Coming home is sometime depressing, Other ski towns have good bus systems and other resources for locals, such and free groomed xc trails and walking paths. Even their thrift store isn’t as greedy as ours. And to top it off they work to open their ski mountains even when it’s butt-ass cold and dumping… Our area is seems is mainly geared to cater to tourists and it shows more and more everyday.

While the credit goes to volunteers and private donors instead of any local government organization, Nevada Nordic, nevadanordic.org, has free groomed XC trails that are great.

Lol… what? Sibo to Palisades and Mainline… and GC for the entire chair and the Peak hike. Red Dog and Oly for the ridge lines. What are you talking about?

Not defending ops at all and I personally love Headwall and have had days where I just lap it endlessly, but found that comment a little strange.

No doubt costs and money are impacting operations (with no mention of them in the excuse blog) but I wonder how much the recent avalanche has made the mountain gun shy to open new avalanche terrain. Another inbounds avalanche in the news cycle would be catastrophic for the Palisades.

wah wah. What are you talking about? Plenty of free xc trails around these parts and groomed/plowed paths. Maybe you're mistaking Truckee for one of the many ski towns around here. I think Palisades does an excellent job of getting things open when it's dumping and it never gets as cold as Jackson so that's irrelevant. I don't know if you missed it while you were gone, but there's a bit of a fuss about maybe things being opened too early recently. I've been to Jackson plenty (and read of their huge housing struggles), and if you don't think they cater to tourists, there's nothing else i can say.

BTW, this will fly in the face of my next post. Which is, they will work very hard to open terrain, if it makes them more money.

Tahoe '23/'24 - Reserve Now For Best Pricing!!!

Say what you want, but I was pleasantly surprised by the traffic last weekend to palisades. Saturday and Sunday, only 25 minutes from Truckee to a parking lot with tons of spots at 8:30am? Sounds like an improvement to me. Whether or not it was a powder day, it was a still a good weather holiday with a bunch of new snow that week.

Lot was filled up by 11am still - the one thing that reservations actually make sense as far helping traffic - is spreading out arrival times in the morning. Many people, hungover folks, and families don’t care about getting first chair and arriving at 8am and would rather show up at 9:30-10:30am. Before they didn’t have a choice though if they wanted a parking spot, so everyone had to leave Truckee at 7-8am. With a guaranteed spot, people can arrive whenever they want in the morning - so they are.

Doesn’t mean it it will fix everything, and I’d imagine a lot more people would want to get there early on a non-blackout powder day so it won’t help as much then, but it’s clearly still an improvement on other days.

The real solution would be making a huge park-n-ride lot in Truckee with lots of busses running back and forth, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon

I will concede that the on mountain experience is fairly good once you get there most of the time. But doesn’t change the fact that it is tough to get to Olympic valley without a car. Donner state park moved their groomer to sugar pine point and now they only roll like half a mile of trail that is covered in dog poop.

Yesterday was a ABSOLUTE joke at PT OV. I'll post pics and vid if I get a minute. KT line all the way to Exhibition, nothing open up top. Not even Wa She Shu to shuttle the kooks to a rideable zone.

I wanted to ride with friends yesterday so we went to PT. I got there with my boys, booted up and walked to KT. Turned around, walked back, got in my car and went to the mountain that will remain unnamed and rode onto chairs all day. Even got free refills from 2-4. Outstanding day.

I know the wind was blowing. It was at the other mountain also and every chair was running except the one that never runs.

Dont get me started on the lame excuses about why they can't run TLC to the top and the complete lack of explanation of why Sherwood hasn't even turned yet.

There's been so much conversation about the mega corps. My opinion, worth it's weight in those blue dog shit bags, is that they're hell bent on fucking up skiing for those that truly love skiing. I'm keeping my pass at the non corporate owned mountain, that shall remain unnamed, forever. Even if my friends from PT bullshit me about it being flat.

Rant over. Tahoe J and mcski can now come along and tell me that I know nothing and should move to the bay or something like that because I'm not local enough.

On a happier note, this snow is finally filing things in over here on the east end. My afternoon walks to the fire lookout will commence soon. Starting to feel like winter over here.

Calm down dude. I agree with you. I’ve pretty much given up skiing (at resorts) on weekends until Spring. I also have never claimed to be a local since I split time between locations. I’m a regular. McSki would say the same.

Far West U16 race actually was on yesterday at Palisades and the course ended up being a freestyle course by the time the boys did their first run and second runs following the girls. Course on Exhibition was mangled in the wet conditions. It was an insane GS course with so many crashes and kids skiing out. Thankfully my son made it down both runs for a solid 23rd finish. Then, today, we got to Palisades this morning at 7:50am and 10 minutes later they cancelled today's GS race because the course was even more beat up after the 4" of snow last night. Frustrating

On another note, it was an absolute zoo at Palisades yesterday as SnowMachine alluded to above. I booted up and ended up doing one lap on Exhibition after my son's first run and then I called it. I've seen the upper mountain is closed chaos at the base before but having the Far West race made it worse. Photo of Red Dog Face run at 2:30pm from yesterday:

Guys. This is such old news. Like over a decade old news. It’s not gonna change. We go through this every. single. winter.

If you can’t stand in line and/or have no patience for operational headaches, do not ski at the big resorts on a Saturday pow day or wind hold day during December, January, or February. And I guess March too.

Ski midweek, or ski when it hasn’t snowed in a bit. The skiing during these months is often really really good many days after the last snow fall. Saturday powder panic is a guaranteed recipe for a bad time. Tuesday chalk ripping? Pretty good time.

or ski in the spring, when the weather is nice, the skiing is firing, and the big nearby cities have forgotten that there’s still snow in them hills.

if you work a M-F job and can only ski on weekends, you gotta recognize that you are part of the problem. I’m not hating, I just am exhausted of seeing meltdowns on every social media outlet by weekend warriors complaining that there are too many other weekend warriors out skiing.

I know it sucks. But it’s not gonna change.

Midweek is usually awesome all winter long. Saturday’s can be manageable if it’s bluebird and calm and it hasn’t snowed in a couple days. Spring is awesome 7 days a week.

there you have it. That’s the secret to resort skiing in our ever crowded world. Rejoice!

I like playing the game of seeing how much longer the gps says it would take me to get to Palisades when I’m getting off at Soda Springs. It is usually another 40-80 minutes and I know it is usually underatated.

I'm good, dude. I learned long ago that I often get along great with people that are happy to hack my heart out on the internet. I met two of my best friends on a wakeboard forum 20 years ago. We're all here for mostly the same reason. Cheers.

Yeah man, apparently nobody works any more. I mean, it's fine for me to take a day off to ski pow, but everybody else should be working...

Joking aside, it's amazing how many people are on the mountain mid week. It took serious life changes for me to be able to do it. The first 40 years of my life did not include mid week skiing unless I was on vacation.
