Winter arrived in Gardnerville. Someone tell me it is dumb to try to grab a few morning laps on Stagecoach tomorrow morning. It will be a shit show due to crowds, maintenance, new snow and general Heavenly nonsense. Right? I have to work tomorrow afternoon so I don't have all day to screw around.

snow in Truckee is around 6" and about 12" at the base of Olympic Valley currently. Going to be cold and North winds the next few days, interesting.

Is Heavenly doing parking reservations at Stagecoach also?

The whole parking thing is really bumming me out, most likely my last year buying an Epic pass.

Arrived early after the blackout period to spin out a few runs for the first time this last week, assumed parking would be free, nope holiday parking goes till Jan 7th.

This is the California base parking lot I couldn’t park in 15 minutes before they opened that I didn’t have reservations for and had to walk in, there’s no way I’d pay to park. At 10:30 when I left it was pretty much at capacity, there making Bank $$$ on parking, probably go to 7 days a week next year

No paid parking at Stagecoach or Boulder. This year anyway. If they decide to do that up there, IDK what I'd do besides switch my schedule to three days midweek off. I am guessing they won't ever charge since there is NOWHERE to park up there for gen-pop besides Stagecoach and Boulder.

Wish I was there, but I have my cousin in town with no pass. Bought him a ticket for today. Headed up to the summit soon. I love those CC days at SB.

WRT parking: I freaking hate it. It ruins the vibe of low key ski days. I feel like it's just a matter of time until PT charges every day, also. The current setup is a test.

Epic and Ikon will ruin skiing as we know it. Greedy corporate fucks.

In California at least it would not shock me if the state eventually required ski areas and all kinds of other businesses to charge for parking, in order to encourage mass transit. If the money went directly to local transit in order to increase service to the point where it was a viable option it would be a good thing but more likely the businesses would keep the money. (In Truckee we pay for disposable take out containers, the money going to the business, even though there's no alternative at any takeout place I know of and the business has no incentive to offer one. )

Early reports from friends indicate Parking Reservations did not help the 89 Traffic Situation from either direction this morning

Still pays to get up early. Even if you have to pay for the right to do so.

Shocked they haven't done this decades ago.

Heard several reports of 2 1/2 hour drives from Meyers and G-ville to get to Kirkwood today with 7am departures.

Meanwhile I left at 7:30 to head to Sierra, found free parking up front, stood in the pass line to get my season pass and got on 2nd chair today. Sure kirkwood was amazing with lots more terrain available but I got my first legit bottomless turns in for the season.

The wood was good. Got firsties on Norms, lower Vista when chair popped, and fawn ridge. Parked out by 830. Unfortunate souls parked past caples dam.

I thought for sure reservations were gonna be the answer to all of our traffic problems. I mean, it's simple math: traffic + reservations = no more traffic. And if that doesn't work, then building out the palisades parking lot and eliminating a bunch of parking while also adding a waterpark will definitely help. And increasing the amount of residential motels. And big hotel and condo projects in Tahoe City. And Homewood. And Crystal Bay. And KIngs Beach. Oh, and can't forget about paying to park in town. Our "leaders" got it all under control.
On another note, WTF is with everyone driving around with ski racks open? Never really saw it before this season, but it seems to be the default option now. Is that some new tech dork I don't give a fuck kinda vibe? Also seen several cars driving down OV road in the past couple weeks with racks open and skis in them, one even flipped me off when I honked and pointed as we were headed opposite directions.

G'ville to Kwood was not too bad except for the MFer in a Prius going negative MPH. I finally passed him right before the pass. Lined up about 8ish. All in all a fun day and first tracks in various spots. I told myself to not go into Eagle Bowl and I didn't...until I did. Hit a rock and got a little core shot in my Chipotle Banana. Apparently is was a pretty good tag since my Technica Cochise 130's upper cuff completely exploded. I recall flexing the boot pretty much in half. I kept skiing thinking my boot felt weird and kept tightening the buckles. Power strap was holding it all together. The boot awaits a warranty decision. IDK what I'm gonna do about a boot.

I was at Mammoth for a 3 day U18 ski race for my son. First day went off without a hitch on Friday. Yesterday they got 1 run in before wind closed the lifts and then races cancelled today because too much snow to set a course. We packed and jetted to get back to the Bay Area as soon as we found out the races were cancelled today around 9am. It took us 8 hours to get home, insane. Most of this was just sitting in non moving bumper to bumper traffic on 88 trying to get past Kirkwood. It was that typical mess on a powder day with everyone trying to turn left into Kirkwood and just waiting blocking all the traffic behind them until Kirkwood employee let them in. Kirkwood had a snow removal truck parked on the shoulder so you couldn't even go around the traffic on the shoulder. That killed over an hour going less than 2 miles. Then 88 was a mess with slushy snow, people putting chains on/off, stopping their cars to throw snowballs, etc all the way to 2600'. My son picked up 10th on Friday though, first Top 10 finish so we'll take it!

Tahoe '23/'24 - Reserve Now For Best Pricing!!!

Not surprised that parking reservations didn’t fix the 9am powder day rush. They have so much parking that any incentive for everyone to show up at the same time will inevitably lead to congestion.

I do wonder whether the traffic dissipated sooner than last year though. No more desperate people circling the resort at 11am to find parking , presumably. Also, I imagine sitting in traffic with the peace of mind that you’ll be able to park is a lot less stressful than sitting in traffic and worrying about parking being full by the time you got there (pretty much my worst nightmare).

After storm skiing Alpine yesterday afternoon and hitting lots of rocks/bumps/shrubs I decided to skip the gong show and head to Relay Peak area. Pretty happy with that decision.

Can confirm. 89 was jammed solid from 80 to OV. Got the family rolling late, chain control hell took an extra hour, and hit the exit ramp about 9:00. Took an hour to get to the OV turn and to the double secret parking spot.

And for what? For a sold out parking lot and only a handful of lifts running nobody was there. Or they all went directly over to Alpine. Kids had a good time though, and I didn't put a core shot into my lhasas when I scraped off a big ass rock.

Otherwood opens today to the top today (Monday). This was it Sunday.

I'm not sure if people are gonna have to download Madden or ski down. The problem is the area between Big Blue and Lombard Street (manzanita section in the video) on that side and the entire lower section of Ore Cart on the other side (end of the video).

Kirkwood dadski on Saturday PM featured excellent free refills in Pali and Wagon Wheel zones until patrol shut them down. Also featured excellent facial hair icing by many participants.

Sunday kidski featured Heavenly bozos on snowboards snaking 8 yr olds to drop into the Wall, only to eat shit on the first turn and get dragged over rocks (hope that shit hurt, ya donkey).

Also featured a bottomless fresh booter landing in Eagle Bowl a full hour after rope drop, mitigating other complaints.
