23/24 Cdn Rockies and related thread

    Let's get this started!

Had a good day on the classic traverse in K-country. Need a bit more snow to ski off the ice. Typical early season hazards, Rocks, roots, crevasses, Solar avalanches and grizzly bears roaming.

Lets get stoked for a new season!

The kick steps are as we crest a 40-45degree slope /800-1000ft vert that had 15cm or less snow on top of frozen shale. We are in crampons elated we made it the top. If we didn’t make this col it was an even longer return route from the direction we came on this circumnavigation

Most times i see the standard track up the south west facing aspect to the col. It may not make a difference this early in the season but i ended up extending the switchback around the corner to where it faces north west. It usually gave me soft snow instead of windswept boiler plate for the sidehilling and took out a couple switchbacks out or the boot slack. Chances are its too thin on any aspect to make work right now but worth poking around the corner when its in

Skied bow summit on Saturday. Softest snow I've ever seen, has no structure and is incredibly light/fluffy so it doesn't surprise me there was a slide. Got a solid 10" core shot but hey that's early season for ya.

Louise on Sunday and that was a treat. Great start to the season imo.

skied LL yesterday. What was open was in good shape, Mid crowds, etc. Odds are not worth buying a ticket, but if you have a pass anyways, worth stretching the legs

Those first few that snuck off pika to the 2 3 trees got 4-5 turns of high moisture packed sharkwater before hitting the cat track, it's too early lads. Just grab your line blades and play slalom with the masses.

For anyone watching this thread who doesn't buy a full pass, the RCR card is now available for purchase and very slightly discounted at $135.

Walked up the poma run with the dog last two days at Panorama. The snow guns have been going hard, looks like the temperatures have allowed a good lay down of man-made base.

Ski teams have been training for the last month.

Will be out there for opening day in two weeks.

    Please, Ullr, send the pow!

    wiwaxy?

Most lake ice in banff is a bit snow covered. Maybe a drive up 93N? Check lake louise, box, peto, waterfoul etc...

or maybe up 40? Spray, barrier, upper K lakes, etc.

Lake Louise was great skating on Wednesday. Two Jack has a light dusting of snow, but still good. Heard great conditions at Peyto, Waterfowl and Spray as well.

Thanks crew. I’m not much of a skater but considering the flurries coming in this weekend, is it too late to take advantage of the smooth and clear ice conditions? What is our best chance of success for Sunday?

Gonna really depend on if that bit of snow they are calling for tomorrow night and Sunday comes in. About the one time in my life I'm hoping it DOESN'T snow. Not enough to make a difference in this shit show of a ski season, but enough to wreck the skating.

    not my report:

Best place to skate was on Spray just south of Driftwood parking lot as ice much clearer there. Had gone by Barrier on way out (looked like glass from road) but no idea if ok.to skate there.

Got some cosmetically beat but functional warder 13 demo bindings I don't need anymore.

I skied them on 1 day last year and I didn't pop out of so I don't think there is anything wrong with them.

Yours for beer money... either you pick them up or if you happen to be not far off my work driving route I might able to drop them off.

    I'm in NW Calgary.
