    Skiing out of Athens

Anyone here spent time living in Athens? Any good info on ski areas in driving distance? Looks like the two popular ski areas are Parnassos and Kalavrita, any opinions on these? Or others in the area?

Any ski areas with a longer drive time that would be worth visiting over a long weekend? (Worth driving to Bulgaria or N. Macedonia?)

Is this comparable to southern California skiing with a lower treeline?

Edit to add: Anyone there now who wants to meet up to go skiing in Feb/Mar timeframe?

There is a ski area on the island of Crete. Which is very exotic I guess. This is always in the silly comments. Do you know there is a lift in Crete!?! Montenegro can be good. Still 12hrs drive in gmaps.?Romanian has a good reputation.
    Turkey delivers. Ask Mike Pow.
    Georgia is well known.

Sorry I have no inside knowledge. You could ask Klar, I guess subtle plague might also know people who know ; D

There are a couple of areas in the Peloponnese (Mainalon and PameZiria) that I am familiar with, but have never been to in the winter. It takes about 3 hours from Athens to get there with good roads. Take a lot of Euro change for tolls every 20-30 miles on the 8 and E65 expressways.

This is an amazing film, has a whole Athens segment I think (or at least Greece) and it looked pretty rad from what I recall. Worth watching the entire thing though.

Bulgaria has some decent skiing but it's definitely a long weekend destination from Athens.

Post up some photos of what you explore. I always find these types of places interesting. Had seen something online about backcountry skiing on Mt Ida.

Valbona and Prokletije parks share amazing terrain, especially when the moisture comes in. Always have wanted to go back and ski.

There's so much interesting skiing across the Balkans. Bulgaria: https://www.skiingthebalkans.com/

In one of his classic pre-2000 films Warren Miller had a segment on Greece. It’s been on my hit-list for years.
Last time I checked, which was a few years ago, I swear there were at least a dozen ski resorts in Greece…

Searching “Warren Miller ski film segment on Greece” yielded these results:

I’ve also perused these sites a few times over the years:

Also, appears NYT did a big expose on skiing Crete, so the secret is out!

I stand corrected…according to this piece there are more than 20(!) ski resorts dotted across Greece:
