WTB: Lightroom 6

Anyone moved on to the Adobe subscription service and have an old standalone version you're not using? Actually just need a valid serial number for the install, happy to pay a fair price.

The subscription is shite. Sure. If you use it everyday it’s a small price. But it locks out occasional users and hobbyists.

I still have a full suite of licenses. Old school. It comes in handy at times. My sons been using a lot of it. Wish I could peel one out to help.

Have you tried the webs? eBay etc. the old license has to be deactivated on the old computer before you can activate. So buyer beware.

PS. They really need to have a “limited days” license for short money.
The current model really cut out a lot of users that are probably shifting to open source programs. Like when Msft went subscription for office. I moved my office to open office. Fuck bill gates.

Or back to piracy...especially since adobe makes it so dang easy. I still suspect that is 100% intentional--they'd rather hobbyists/students/teens pirate it than learn another software and put money in competitors pockets...if those people ever get serious or become professionals they'll just start paying Adobe money.

Really sucks if you are someone who only uses Lightroom on occasion (like after vacations) and doesn't need all the latest updates (although the noise reduction they added in 2023 is killer). Would love to pay $150 or whatever their old price was and just have the current version for years until I either get an unsupported camera or they release a feature I really want.

Can try DxO PhotoLab or Capture One, although C1 is moving towards a subscription model so who knows how long their 1-time-purchase option will continue to exist.

The DxO PhotoLab software has a free trial and I gave it a try last weekend. Results are really good although it takes some getting used to the interface. I also don't like how using stuff like the AI noise reduction requires you to export an image--I prefer how Lightroom stacks the .dng file so it feels like you are still editing one photo (and you can make further edits after denoising).

The Open Source option here, DarkTable, just doesn't seem quite good enough--maybe RAW processing and lossless editing is too niche of an area (and requires too much expensive gear for keeping up to date with cameras and lenses) for the open source process to work well. If lightroom weren't an option, I think I'd wait for a sale and buy a DxO Photolab license before switching to DarkTable.

Thanks for the alternative software suggestions, will try if i exhaust all other options. Recently upgraded to a 5Div and my LR 5 doesn't support the RAW files, would prefer not to have to use a dng converter every time.

Twice. Full bricked and had to restore. Thankfully most files were backed to the cloud. And that server didn’t even have any pirate software.

That's a perfectly reasonable attitude...and really anything that qualifies as a "work" machine shouldn't have anything pirated on it.

But my recollection is that with Adobe software you can literally download the installer direct from Adobe, block the software from phoning home to the internet with your firewall, and then run a small crack/patch program that has been thoroughly tested by the community to be safe as long as you get it from the "official" sources.

Which leads to my assumption that Adobe really doesn't care about piracy from small time users. They could make it WAY harder so that it requires much sketchier piracy methods like a lot of other software (and make it so features break or the program becomes unstable)...but they don't seem to care.

End of the day though, if we're just talking Lightroom or Lightroom+Photoshop, it is really not that expensive. Sucks to be locked into a subscription, but a month ago you could buy a year of Lightroom+Photoshop for $90 and there are a lot of people who have been able to sneak into a deeply discounted academic license with various workarounds.

At that price it would take 3 years for DxO to come out ahead (longer for C1), and 3-4 years is probably the length of time where you might want to upgrade anyways...with LR, you get the new features AND you have access to Photoshop.

I was forced to leave LR6 behind when my phone started producing photos and videos that weren't compatible--there were workarounds, but they weren't ideal. And this year I bought a new camera body that I don't think would have been compatible either (OM-D E-M5 mk3). I do appreciate some of the new features though.

• The dehaze slider is killer. You can backdoor into it in non-cloud LR6 with these presets: https://proloststore.com/products/dehaze (because Adobe was a dick and built in the feature to LR6 but only activated it for CC subscribers) but it is sure sure convenient to have the slider.
• AI masking seems to have changed the way I edit photos now--so easy to mask the background/subject and apply different edits. Great for stuff like travel snapshots of people in front of mountains where you can quickly recover mountain/sky detail without making the people look weird.
• The new 2023 AI denoise is super good--but now I need a new computer because it takes 3+ minutes to denoise a single image.

Really good to know, i just assumed dehaze wasn't available on the standalone version.

Upside of SaaS version is I can be on the road, transfer pics from my Sony to my phone and they'll be in whatever device I have--laptop or tablet--whenever I get access or get back home. Having LR on my phone is admittedly pretty fun.

And yeah, the revenue lost from corporate multi-users and sharing probably dwarfed the hobby user.
