please confirm that these skis are mismounted

I made the mistake of buying some skis on Ebay, when I got them somewhat luckily one binding was off for shipping and I discovered the toe piece has been remounted (which he didn't disclose) and the holes are basically touching each other. Super sketchy in my opinion. He says it was done at a shop, no shop I know of would do this. Can people confirm this is unacceptable and unsafe?

That is definitely 2 mounts. Plenty of shops would screw up a mount, plug the holes and remount. A good one would tell you about it and give you a discount on the mount, a kinda shitty one wouldnt tell you. But unless the ski tech told his boss about his screwup, they wouldnt know either.

i would have zero problems skiing with holes that close and have mounted multiple skis with holes that close. I am 6'4" around 200lbs fully kitted up for skiing and ride around a 13 DIN for reference. Its not ideal, but also not something id worry about.

Ya sketchy and poor form by seller. Looks like you can put inserts and also helicoils outside the inserts and that will cover up the overlap. Inserts will give you 1.5 mm and the helicoil will give you another 1.5mm. Tjat should spread out over those old holes. I had to do that last year on a pair. Eorked a charm. Just took an insert into the local auto parts store and they grabbed me a 10 pac of helicoils that the inserts screwed into. I shortened the depth of the inserts with a pair of snips so theyre the same depth as inserts

I wouldn't ski those without a helicoil, and then I think only if that's a metal topsheet ski.

Personally, I'd demand a refund and that the seller cover return shipping. Doesn't ebay side heavily with buyers if items are not as described?

Eh, you bought used skis. Used skis will have holes in them. From that pic, I wouldn't be too worried.

Remount the bindings if you're scared. Go more center.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'd ski them from just looking at a picture, but agree that this is a seller problem. Even if they weren't aware of the screw up, they clearly saw it when they removed the toe.

Did the seller say that these were only drilled once?

If not, buyer beware and all that.

That’s a mis-mount. Should have coiled afterwards for the second holes. Minimum distance between holes without a coil is 8-10mm.

If metal ski I'd run it as is, but those look like cap skis.

100% this. An honest tech and shop would own it, coil it, do the mount for free and then throw a discount card or something similar in for future purchases. Shitty incident to own, but everyone makes mistakes and would build a surprising amount of trust with the customer by informing them and making it right.

Regarding the holes, they should definitely be coiled though.

It’s a Bent Chetler, so no metal. So would a helicoil work in it, in a non metal ski?

    Hah!

It’s possible the shop screwed up and seller didn’t know. But you said one binding was removed. Meaning the seller had to know if there were four holes before boxing and shipping. Send them back. eBay sucks but they do protect buyers.

Major question is what is the plug? Epoxy I might trust. A plastic plug is sketchy af and dangerous.

PS. Odd they removed one binding for shipping. Weird. But good they did. Otherwise you would have no idea. If you work out a partial refund and do the repair, I would check the other ski.

I've mounted bindings that close and skied. Filled previous holes with wooden dowels and epoxy. I'm still alive. But not saying about second mound is still a shitty move

I don't do ebay or paypal, but is there some clause that says you can get reimbursed for fixing a faulty/not as described product? Two options here:
    1) Send them back
    or
    2) I'd just helicoil them for peace of mind, send the bill to the seller via some form, but I've definitely skied skis with holes that close.

There's 2 discussions going on here.

    1. What to do going forward to make the skis viable.
Lotsa good info as to how to make it mo betta.

    2. How to remedy a buy gone awry.
An ebay purchase that does not specifically state that it's exactly what you're looking for, is gonna be impossible to get anything back on them.
Nor would you deserve it. It's an auction house. You get what's advertised.

I've bought used skis from ebay and ya never know what's going on beneath the clamps unless seller tells you explicitly from first hand knowledge what the hole status is.

As I said before - Caveat Emptor.

Yes, two separate issues here. I screwed up by not fully clarifying that there was only one set of holes. The seller doesn't seem to really be a skier and doesn't acknowledge that having another set of holes diminishes a skis value etc and knew about it but doesn't care. Anyways, my question is solely about dealing with the technical issue of the holes. So, will a helicoil work well if there is no metal in the ski?

What length? Send them to me and I’ll helicoil them and ski them for a bit to see how they hold up

Torque test at a local shop? I’ve had a similar mount on a pair of Kartels ( no metal ) for years, no issues.

I'd replace with wood dowels/epoxy before helicoiling and use the existing holes if that was your plan.

If you really want to keep those skis instead of forcing a refund, I'd remount with a different binding (different hole pattern) that has the foremost toe screws forward of the foremost existing holes.

Was the purchase price so cheap that it's worth keeping them?
