Complicated case. The part of the brain (occipital lobe) affected by the stroke gets its blood supply primarily from the vertebral/basilar artery system, not the carotids. (Sudden loss of vision is a warning sign of an impending stroke from the carotid artery but that's because it's usually due to a blood clot in the eye from the carotid artery, not the the occipital lobe.)

Completely blocked carotid arteries cannot be cleaned out. The partially blocked right carotid could potentially be fixed on a purely preventative basis, depending on how bad the blockage is, but not usually done in the setting of a fresh stroke. The vertebral basilar system is rarely fixed except in unusual situations. I'm sure all this has been discussed with Bob.

Hope they let you loose soon, Bob. At least there's no snow on those mountains to make you feel even worse about being laid up.

They let me out on Saturday, just in time to watch the Michigan game. I had an appointment with a vascular surgeon today, have an endarterectomy scheduled for November 7th. As Old Goat said, they’re leaving the plugged side alone, and cleaning out the clogged side.

They let me out on Saturday, just in time to watch the Michigan game. I had an appointment with a vascular surgeon today, have an endarterectomy scheduled for November 7th. As Old Goat said, they’re leaving the plugged side alone, and cleaning out the clogged side.

Yeah that's a nice respectable amount of time to wait. (If you do it too soon after a stroke some risk of bleeding in the brain.)
Speaking of the Michigan game--I once postponed an appendectomy a few hours because the guy wanted to watch Michigan. We watched it together. Michigan won, the appendix lost. I made up some story for anesthesia about when the guy last ate to justify the delay.

A former boss of mine had a similar experience. He did recover and never did get back full vision. Had lost a bit of peripheral vision in his left eye. Hope you make a full recovery.

Went in last Tuesday morning for the endarterectomy. They told me it’d lessen my chance of another stroke by 50%, from 2% to 1%. But, I’d also have a 5% chance of dying during the two hour surgery.

I wasn’t sure the math pencilled out but went along with it.

Arrived at 5am as I was first on the docket. No food for a while, anti-bacterial soap down in the shower. They quickly had me in a room and an iv in me.

Next up came the dude to put in the arterial line, not a fun time. I’m terrified of needles and this was like a horror show. Lidocaine to numb the first spot where he couldn’t get it in, then more lidocaine in another spot. He finally got it in and I glanced over, holy bloody mess on me and the floor.

They wheeled me into a room with probably a dozen other people, transferred me onto the table and strapped me in. “10 more breaths and you’ll be out…”

I woke up in the ICU, not really feeling any pain. The nurses were stellar, each of them angels. Spent that night in the ICU, worst sleeping place ever, it’s like they don’t even want you to sleep. By now I had two ivs, one arterial line, and six electrodes on me. Not really conducive to sleeping even without the angel nurses.

The one bright spot was they let me eat by nightime, they also had rather fine hospital food. I’d probably not make a reservation purely for the food but it was pretty tasty.

Spent the next morning getting prodded and continually quizzed on my mental and physical states.

They finally let me out in the afternoon. Been hanging at my house for the last few days, first shower today. Went up to Snowbird and grabbed my pass and free tee-shirt today. Wore a hoody so I didn’t look quite so gruesome, heh.

i'm surprised that they put in the A-line when you were awake... I've only had em put in while sleeping, and that is definitely not something I would want to be awake for. Holy fuck.

No, it was a Dr Sheehan, he seemed to do a good job. Last thing I told him was, “I’ve got a lot of fish to catch and pow to ski, don’t kill me.”

Been having up days and down days, today was a bit more pain. Got out of the house and hiked a bit up the West Grandeur trail, I’m definitely not moving fast yet.

My neck is still a bit swollen and my wrist still hurts from the A-line. Gonna chill here at home again this week, hoping to maybe fish next weekend.
