Enjoyed reading that review. Reminded me of how excited I was to first ski the Protests, and how special they are.

@shredeagle gpo would not be a first choice for a kid that wants to do comps and land switch and do a some park. Jedi mind sticks are what you want and fit a jibby freeride big mountain ski much better. MVP 108 does too if you want something narrower.

@east or bust, remember that most women don’t need nearly as much width for their Pow skis as a dude does. At 200 lbs, I ski a 192cm protest. Average width of the protest is roughly 134mm down the length of the ski (accounting for wider tips and tails than the waist).

Dividing my weight by the surface area of two skis comes out to .00039 lbs/mm^2 (let’s call that the float factor).

Now my GF at 125lbs on a 163cm protest (average width down whole length of the ski ~125cm roughly). That comes out to ~.00030 lbs/mm^2 float factor.

So despite the waist width of the 163cm protest at 119mm being 9mm narrower than the 128mm 192cm protest I ride - she still has about 23% less surface pressure on the snow, ~23% greater float. So she gets better float out of the narrower ski than I do. Powder ski float favors lighter riders and they can get away with narrower skis.

And that’s for protests with much bigger difference in waist widths between the sizes. For the GPO, it’d be even more favorable for your GF

On that note, I am still a little torn on which powder ski to get mine for a Tahoe. She just switched back to skiing after boarding for 10 years, she keeps up on pretty much any run but certainly takes the steeper stuff at a slower pace. Her current DD is a 158cm Nordica Santa Ana 93.

165cm GPO, 163cm MVP 108, or 163cm Protest are all options.

Even the protests are still .5lbs lighter than the Santa Ana’s, but they maybe aren’t as versatile as the other two options to round out a 2 ski quiver. The snow gets heavy and cut up pretty quick, I’ve enjoyed having more fat tip/pin tail type designs to mob over everything, but she doesn’t ski that way (not a fast charger lol)

GPOs might be a good middle ground for her? She’s not quite a “drive the shins” skier yet, so that could push me back towards GPOs or MVPs. I always felt Protests were better in lighter density snow (colorado and Utah), but I haven’t skied the latest iteration yet

I had been on the fence about a mid fatty: Hoji, Saba Pro, Revolt....

I think I might have to pay Keith a visit. The Mind Sticks look like my type of ski.

She is (I guess) 5’3”, 125 or so, she’s really strong. She’s played soccer her whole life, skis a lot. She could probably use a bigger ski, but she’s super comfortable on these, etc.

Don't need new skis, but would love to help Keith. Two questions...
    1) Are any of the topsheets available? Some skis pop up with a topsheet, some are blank outlines. Edit: I don't care too much about topsheets, but a) the veneers seem kinda 2000 and b) the Feast, Abominable and Topo tops are sick!
    2) If anything, I could use a new western daily driver. Crazily, a few hoarded 13 year old 4frnt EHPs still play that role, as long as snow is semi soft. I'm ok with wide and like heavy, but need pivoty, especially for tight trees and versatility for moguls. I know everyone needs a Protest, but I've got a 194 SGN Togga reverse camber for big snow and cat days. So... seems like GPO, MVP and RX are the go-to fan faves as western DD's. But I have trouble distinguishing between them. Any primer or help? Maybe some others wondering the same?
    Thx!

I’d say GPO or MVP. Smaller radius may be more like the Nordica?

Jedi Mindsticks look like a fun ski. Not really in the market for anything this year as I bought a set of skis last season.

Never met Keith before, but have friends on his skis. Always planned on buying from him, so this seemed like the right time. Pretty excited to get these on snow.

    Now I want some Protests.

Man I don't need another ski but this is something to support.

I wish Keith had that frs in the 188 so they could already be headed to me. Anyone have much time on these?

Would also like some info on the GPO as the oak veneers look sick. I know they got some weird review from blister back in the day but would love the TGR review of the ski and characteristics.

May just add a protest for the hero days.

GPOs are a sweet big mountain ski. They carve and handle hard-pack super well for their width, but are easy to throw around in tight spaces and float decently well. Very versatile for a fat ski. Pretty much do well everywhere, predictable and not super demanding. Can’t go wrong. If you drive your tips, mount them -1.5 or -2. If you ski pretty centered, line is good.

Any insight on the RX mount point? I tend to ski stiff directional skis with moderate amounts of camber (4-6 mm) mounted on the line

Mounted on the line here, or maybe just behind for a remount 2 years ago as I stepped down a boot size.

I’ve been happy there, definitely wouldn’t go forward. Interested to hear if others have mounted farther back.

MY Stevens Pass daily's on the narrow side are FRDs... great ski... carve trenches,,, good in new snow... on deeper days i wish they were a bit wider....

I'd like to find something between the dd w/ FRDs and the deep and fluffy day w/ Ullr 194s

I've skied these for a couple of years now. They are awesome. I'll ski them in anything as long as it isn't hard snow. Super easy to slarve or carve. Good at high speeds. A handful at low speeds/bumps though. I just always picture Drew Tabke, then I stick my arms out and try to ski like him. I haven't skied mine as much since I got the Jedi's, but I think I was just having fun getting familiar with the Jedi and it wasn't really a knock on the FRS. Happy to try to answer any questions you have.

My original era GPO have about 100 days on them, and the only thing I bought for myself this year is a new pair. Old ones will get light pin binders, new pair gets P14s.

I'm pretty sure mine are on the line as well. Very directional and responsive to tip pressure.
Edited to add: Don't be fooled by the user name, they are mounted with shifts.

Nice, I appreciate the input from folks. The recommended mount point (-8) seems reasonable given the shape of the ski and my skiing style, so it's good to hear that's borne out in reality.

How do you like the Shifts on them? I'd be using these for patrol/control work and would likely be mounting some kind of heavier touring or "50/50" binding on them.

Lol, that is the exact top sheet I was thinking but on the Protests, great minds....

I am a big fan of supporting U.S. manufacturing and small business so all in on a set of Protests, thanks for brining this to our attention Muggy.

Anyone know if Keith is open to giving a quick tour of the plant/process? Never seen skis made in person and think my son would get a kick out of seeing it as well.
