    I advocate going light.
    It's possible to pack a day pack in your roller bag (and I __highly__ recommend a roller bag), but I normally just use the 40L BCA pack as my ski pack.

    Some 40Ls are tall and won't fit in the overhead, but the BCA one does. I imagine some 45Ls do too.

    Also, some of the big lines there (like the 8k vertical foot Oberalpstock) require a couple hours of easy skinning. And for those interested, there's a ton of great tours within 15 minutes of mountain lodge like zzz and criscam did a couple years ago using a local private cable car.

    So, if interested in that stuff, chat it up so people are prepared with equipment and Michele can line up guides if desired.

    Thanks Buster. I was planning to bring my avy pack in my roller bag (it's a slim pack) and NOT planning to bring skins or skis with touring bindings. I'd really not rather ski on touring equipment, especially on anything consequential. I was under the impression AT bindings were not necessary to explore the terrain. Happy to bootpack, of course.

    There's so much to ski with short bootpacks, you're right, skins are not at all necessary.

    The biggest bootpacks are really only 100 vertical meters or so, doable in 15 minutes.

    What BCA pack are you referencing?

    I was assuming I had to bring skins, but I'm not down with huge tours, short ones to get to some goods are what I'd be up for. But I will have touring bindings, because tele.

    It's pretty old, at least 10 years and it says Stash H20 on it, but I can't find other id marks.

    No skins required unless you want to do the Oberalpstock or tours off the Tgoms tram. Bootpacks to the Guspis and above Felsental are great and some to access Val Strem off Disentis.

    I threw a 20L hydration pack in my roller bag. It's a 2 pr ski roller bag that had 1 pr in it. I used 2 smaller backpacks and loose clothing to fill it out. They will take EVERYTHING out of it at the airport oversized baggage inspection

    I took Busters "pack light" to heart. I actually took my shit to PDX to do a test carry thru the airport. After getting home I shedded about 10-15 pounds. My 40L with boots was 20lb, a personal cabin bag was 10lb and my roller bag was 40lb, (it started out 50). It was a manageable weight for me. The roller bag was closer to 50lb on the way home from souvenirs. I used Voile straps to affix the small pack to the roller bag

    I didn't even take skis last time. I just found a shop that looked like it had what I wanted, emailed a bit and had it dialed before I ever flew.

    Brand new volkl demos with the new marker clamps. Cheap too. Pay the most for 1 day about $50, then decreasing each day. About $120 for 5 days.
    When I turned them in, the shop guy had just returned from skiing and offered me a local made schnappes shot. It was bombproof strong.

    There's a ton of skinny on piste, short racy skis and a lot of touring rigs for rent in all of the towns in the valley. Most in Andermatt or Disentis. Some close to the Lodge too.

    I took a carry on roller bag with my boots and ski clothes and a midsize ski pack, slimline style, but packed snug with avy gear and more clothes and toiletries.

    I carried on everything I needed for a week. Might do the same again, depending on conditions.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I'm reminded of maching around on those groomers with RA13, racing the chairs back to Rueras from Andermatt one day before sunset. Then the sledding trail back to the road, about 1500' from the lodge.
    I bought this Osprey Daylight 44L on Amazon for $90. Pretty good discount, I guess nobody wants the green color. This and my ski roller bag should suffice.
    This discussion is very helpful to think about options. I've only flown with skis once before and that was 15+ years ago plus I had a friend/car waiting on the other end, so this is all pretty new to me.
    While the "rent skis there" idea does have appeal, I don't expect there to be tele rentals, so...
    While everyone’s blahblahblah about rentals…
    For us flatlandsrs: any access to Avi gear? Is it necessary? Are there folks on piste the whole week??? (I have an old, old, old beacon….obv not much use in Delaware☹️).
    Also: didn’t see it in Buster’s original post, but:
    It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
    I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
    There's too much good skiing '"off piste" to skip the beacon, but you could stay on groomers.
    There are other rental options closer to mountain lodge that Michele knows..
    Here is my luggage sitch from the first meat up.
    Easy to travel with, light and fast. 32L pack with enough clothes to get me by in a pinch, boots draped on back, carry on. Roller ski bag, a must as mentioned, with all other gear. TSA will kindly rearrange your duffle to resemble how it would look if your bag went off a giant cliff. So courteous of them.
    Do the airlines give any hassle for carrying on a pack*and* ski boots? Seems like both have to go in the overhead?
    What is that? Search and rescue insurance?
    I've never been hassled for boots+pack. boots can fit under seat in front.
    rega is rescue insurance to get you from off piste to the hospital.
    Never had an issue. Just keep your pack relatively small so you can treat it as your personal item, but still throw it in the overhead.
    I keep my boots, beacon, shell and one set of clothes in my duffel so the airlines can’t lose it. Everything else goes in the ski bag.
    And yes, the REGA patronage is cheap s&r insurance.
    I’ve rented tele in Klosters to try it out, would be surprised if there aren’t options round Rueras. Suggest emailing a shop (maybe ask Michele) if you want to seriously consider it.
