Mexico City Recs
I have an ~18hr layover in Mexico City on each end of Troncones trip in October. Not time for much, but enough to putz around for a bit. Any recs on zones to explore, places to stay, restaurants, etc?

Is your layover daytime or overnight? If overnight stay in the Roma Norte/Condessa neighborhood for bars and nightlife, tree lined streets and a generally safe feel. Paseo de la Reforma around the Angel de la Indepencia is also walkable, but feels more business districty. Good food is everywhere. Standouts for me were Tacos El Califa for al pastor and tacos Los Cucuyos for traditional street tacos, including a crispy tripe.

DF is incredible. Arrive hungry and just pig out. Right beside the airport you'll find absolutely incredible street food.
Oct will have some great Dia del los Muertos art to check out even if you're there earlier in the month. If you will be there during the day/evening and want to splurge a bit, Pujol is a worthy stop. Polanco is fancy and safe.
If you want a gritter, more overwhelming experience, check out the central market S of the airport, especially if you speak Spanish.ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.

Never been to Pujol because it's always booked out. Can you just show up and get a table or reservations only? I tried to book a few months ago and there was nothing available for our dates.
We'll be in CDMX October 27-29 and the James Bond Parade is that Saturday and the Grand Prix is Sunday. If you happen to be going through that weekend book something soon because the city will be fucking packed.

Another vote for Tacos El Califa. I was in town with a colleague who grew up in Mexico City and he took us there. Really fucking good food, though TBF I don't recall ever having any bad food in DF, even the sandwiches I bought from a street vendor by the bus station were great. I don't think you'll go wrong at any place with a good number of customers.
I agree Pujol is worth checking out, maybe less so if you're traveling solo. My wife and I were able to get in on relatively short notice (maybe 4-5 weeks out) by taking a very unfashionable time: I think we sat down for dinner at 2:30. Pretty sure the only way to get in is with a reservation. Quintonil is the other high-end foodie restaurant that I hear people talk about in DF. I've never been there, but definitely worth taking a look: https://quintonil.com/en/home-3/

Pujol was good, we did the full meal; I would opt for the taco tasting next time (if they still do it). Tehotihucan and the Frida Kahlo house were cool if you're into that sorta thing. BTW, Uber is/was super cheap. +1 on Roma del Sur/Condessa, think MX Brooklyn, lotsa pretty, young people and bars/restaurants.

I've got some bar recs.
Ladina Bar is awesome. Cool. Usually super mellow. Can't remember main bartenders name but he does some really fun cocktails.
If you are into the whole speakeasy thing Make reservations check out Hanky Panky. It was named on the worlds top 50 bars. Try to sit at the bar. Service can be a little slow but all the cocktails are awesome.
If you're into mezcal check out La Clandestina. They have a bunch of un-registered distillate. You can sit outside and people watch as well.
Breakfast at Lardo is a must. Great food. Beautiful space!
If you are into seafood check out Contramar. Reservations are recommended, but there is a small bar you can grab seats at. Pretty solid mezcal too... Try anything from Lalocura if they are still carrying it.
Another Top 50 bar. Licorería Limantour. Didn't have reservations so we were only able to have 1 cocktail. It was great.
If you do check out the Frida Kahlo museum. On your way out there or back check out Kaito Bar Izakaya. Ask to sit at the bar. There is a japanese bar downstairs and another Top-50 bar upstairs. Get the Ramen!!
Mexico City is great! As others have said, eat all the food.is this thing on?

Good timing for this thread since I'm going to be down there for work in a few weeks. I'm thinking the wife and 1 year old are going to join for a few days.
Anyone have any good recommendations for a short weekend trip outside of DF? It's been close to 20 years since I was there.

Anyone know the locker situation in the MEX airport? I've been trying to find out if they have anything big enough, or secure enough for me to leave a bike in travel bag for a couple of days. I'd love to not have to drag it around the city.

Might be an obvious idea but Pyramid of the Sun/Moon is amazing and a short drive.

Yes. i have flown into Mex DF a few times with bike. There is a bag check there. Not expensive if I recall. There is a very cool place in the historic distrrcit called Downtown beds. There is a very cool open air restaurant in the main courtyard. Amazing mex tapas upstairs with good wine.
For those that want a day trip, you could go to Tepotzlan and hike to the small piramid up in the mountain, Sleepy little town about 1.5 hour bus ride. Amazing food there and a very chill vibe.
If you are there on a Sunday, make sure you go on the Sunday bike ride through the centre of the city. They close down many of the streets and you can ride for hoursWhat if "Alternative" energy wasn't so alternative ?
