    Hurricane 2023

Historic Hurricane Hillary is bearing down on SoCal, and there are five different areas with the potential to develop in the historically hot Atlantic. God speed to all the coast dwellers and to the underwriters.

The atlantic potential is pretty minimal though. I'm Monitoring it because we need sone swell in ireland that's not short period nonsense generated a few km offshore.
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

My typical not busy Friday afternoon trip to local San Diego Costco was nuts yesterday. Busiest I have ever seen and employees said it was like pandemic start. I didn't buy anything extra.

Plan to fill some water jugs. And yell at kids more than normal for have fridge or freezer open :-).

Could be foot of rain in mountains! Rain amounts in San Diego city should be ok, with normal spots flooding. I'm a little concerned about wind speeds, HOA has a few eucalyptus trees behind my house.

First MLB game (Padres) taking all three kids (8,5,2) was Sunday, now today!

For coastal areas, it feels like it may be similar in severity to a strong winter storm, no? Hopefully, power outages and damages, especially from trees, will not be more severe. Inland areas, that looks rough, based on fx’s.

The 72-hr QPF for SoCal and SoNev is nuts. Shit is going to get real in (un)favored areas.

Most of the power lines are underground where my family in SD lives, but the tubes that house them could flood with that much water..

Winds fanning the flames up around Spokane?

I’m not at any risk for anything. I like the smell of rain
But it does look like flash flooding will happen down south

8-14" of rain in the forecast for the western side of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir in northern Baja. I started researching backpacking in that zone when staying in San Felipe last year. You can go from near the ocean to 10k in less than 30 miles coming from the East. This is gunna be a gnarly storm for a lot of people near the border.

I have noticed the news talking about what the effects might be in the USA, this thing is hitting Baja Mexico, people do live there. Looks like it's going to be rough for them.

Elevation of Baja is 102' 30-40 feet of storm surge would submerge a lot of that peninsula. There are almost 4 million people living there..

Caribbean was quiet all summer. I have a trip planned for September. Big birthday trip.

Five storms are brewing this week.

I've got to think the biggest risk in the San Diego area is erosion from the torrential rain. Lots of hills/ravines and lots of houses built on them. I doubt the wind speeds will be high enough at that point for any major wind damage.

Yeah, could some of the cliffs above the beaches (like Blacks) fall in with all the moisture saturation?

Currently in Phoenix with the wife and Thing Two. T2 is off to college in San Diego, and we were planning to head out from PHX tomorrow, then get her moved in on Monday…Based on what I’m seeing, we’d be driving right through the middle of the shit, so we’re gonna spend an extra day here and make the drive Monday morning. Thoughts from the collective?

Ya pretty sure all activities at SDSU and other places there will be shut down during storm warnings and the aftermath of anything major Incoming students are probably getting email notices to slow their rolls... Schools here were closed Wednesday and Thursday when 100K+ lost power in a bad storm Tuesday afternoon.

I'd say be prepared to be in PHX for a few days. It might even be worth going home to wait.

Yeah, you don't want to drive in an August SD rain...will be slick as fuck after ~5 months of no rain.

Plus you need to cross Imperial Valley, which has extreme amounts of rain forecast. And Laguna Mtns.

I hear you man, and the school (not SDSU) has been really good about sending out info, take your time, we’ll be here all week, etc. We’re gonna take it day by day, but fuck if ima drive back to the Q, it’s actually nice and cool(er)
    In Phoenix at the moment….

Eerily calm out tonight, no normal sea breeze. Cloudy and weird looking sunset.

NOAA forecast 45 mph winds for house, which is around what we get during Santa Anas I think. But if it is from South would not be ideal for keep eucalyptus trees from hitting my house.... stupid things.
