The snow was actually better on the lower mountain. Too much wind at the top has left some ice patches.

Only Alpha, Nevada and Franciscano opened. Not sure what will open tomorrow.

Thought I could get some runs in early for a Saturday, but things were not “normal”, and it was line ups from before 9am. Few runs were packed, with just two ways down the base. Lots of lift stoppages too. My theory is lack of personnel, and perhaps machinery, as less than than half the ski area was open before 2 days ago.

The racers are back, with team USA leading the pack

And some off piste adventuring could still be had, wind pack at the top, and choppy powder at the bottom.

Looking good for a full moon ski this week.

Ha! Don Otto terminal in Chillan.

Until they dig that out, half the resort is touring only. They say the BC in snowmobile is fantastic.

    Guess this is inbounds

Looks like some redemption for your area finally.
Tolhuaca really does look sick. Access is a little trickier than the other volcanoes nearby. But that face in your photo has a lot more variety than your standard symmetrical cone. Next trip....

Got a bit of powder yesterday in La Parva, from a brief snowfall on the upper mountain, and wind on Monday.

Mostly racers from Austria, US, and elsewhere, plus ski camps or tour groups. Zero line ups but only 2 runs open to the general public. Serious run and lift maintenance issues.

As my full moon partners had a car failure, I opted instead for a crepuscular ski down, after the early moonrise. Some pics from the "Blue Supermoon" sunset.

We've reached the end of three weeks in Chile y Argentina, and it's time to begin the long trip back to summer.
We traveled from Portillo>Pucon>San Marin de los Andes>El Bolson>Bariloche>Villa Angostura.
If the trip was a Grateful Dead set, it would be one of the best ever.
Skied at five places in all, the big storm chased us out of Portillo a day early and left great skiing at all the other places.
    Haste La proxima Ano!

    Ski Chile 2023 vroom vroom

So this sequence of disturbances is like an amoeba slithering around the high Andes, dumping snow here, raining a bit there, blowing like hell up thar, for the next 5 days.

For tomorrow, the Santiago Andes forecast is a complicated “Cubierto con nevadas débiles variando a nublado y rachas de viento hasta 40 km/h. Probable ventisca y tormentas eléctricas.2100-2300 mts.”

Portillo got 31cm last night, and more today, but the 3 Valleys got just a wet dusting.

    Thar she slithers

Wednesday is looking like the big dump day.

“Vaguada en altura”, or “high altitude low pressure system” is the culprit at the moment.
