Apparently the spring locking mechanism on the recalled avalanche shovels can fail in an emergency excavation.

My wife had one of these shovels (I presume) that she sent back to Mammut and got a replacement. Hers acted normally at room temperature and was problematic in the cold. Fortunately we identified the issue using the shovel while camping and not in a emergency. If you do have one I would verify that it works adequately while ice cold and covered in snow.
