7 WT recs

Yes you need a 7 weight fly rod. How many boats do you have? If a zombie trout apocalypse comes to your lake will you have a 7 weight handy to defend the shore? What would Swimmy do?

Buy a 7 weight, you really need one.

That’s pretty funny. I have a 6 and 2 8’s. The 2nd 8 was an upgrade from a cheap old Loomis to an Edge and you notice I didn’t buy a 7. My 6 is a saltwater 6 with a fighting, butt, and works for pike, surf perch, bonefish, nymphing, etc.

Anyone have a recommendation of what line to put on the 7wt Helios 3D? Trying not to overthink this.

Was leaning toward the SA Amp Infinity line. Usage wise I’d guesstimate 80% cool/warm freshwater, 15% NE salt, 5% warm salt.

Are you using it primarily to chuck streamers? If so you want a sink tip line. And warm salt and cold fresh do not work well for the same line, I’ve tried.

Primarily yes, but for any kind of bass/pike fishing I do love using topwater flies.. If I do go for a sink tip line it'd definitely be a RIO outbound or streamertip. I've had lines go limp before, I guess for my usage rate we can pretty much rule out any warm salt.


There's a lot of choices for fly lines out there but I guess my main question was related to head weights. For example the 7wt SA infinity is quite a bit heavier than say a 7wt RIO streamertip, it's even heavier than the 8wt RIO streamertip. For anyone who has fished a Helios, does it make sense to be lining up for more standard weight fly lines like the RIOs?



eta: here's some data for da nerds

SA Amp Infinity WF-7-F ... 305gr/19,7g
RIO Outbound 7wt ... 265gr/17gm
RIO Outbound 8wt ... 330gr/21gm
RIO streamertip 7wt ... 240gr/15.6gm
RIO streamertip 8wt ... 280gr/18.1gm

So there's no way I'd line up on the Outbound, but would consider lining up on the streamtip.

L8APX is the one to correctly answer this since its his rod design. From what I have experienced with the 2 Helios rods ?I have they cast more like a traditional rod weight than the Sage rods I own. For a sage rod I would say line up, for the Helios ?I would go with a true 7 weight line. As far as tip weight a lot of that depends on the water you are fishing. Here on the South Fork I like a heavier tip since this is a big fast and mostly deep river and I’m want to get it down fast. For slower or shallower water you want to go a little lighter.
All just my $0.02 and others may disagree.

I'm pretty sure I was using 18' of 250 grain. Any heaver and it will be too clunky.

That Rio Streamer Tip is my favorite taper although I've had quality issues and seem to chew through their lines. Maybe they've made some changes but a couple years ago I switched to SA.

Oh and I too switched to SA and have had much better durability over the Rio lines
