    Pivot Heel Gap Question

Picked up a pair of skis that had Pivots mounted for a 310 BSL. As far as I understand, they have a 22mm total adjustment length, so ~11mm in either direction. My boots are a 318 BSL so I figured that would be enough wiggle room to adjust for my boots without needing to remount. I opened up the adjustable arm so that third ring on the arm is almost entirely visible. When I put my boots in without any pressure, there is essentially no gap between the binding and the far heel edge of the boot. If I apply a little downward pressure on the boot, the heel of the binding starts to slide backwards a little bit and with even more pressure they go back enough that I can step all the way down in the boot, the binding closes and it's locked in. The white forward pressure indicator at this point looks good, right in between the smaller black dimples.

So - the boots go into the bindings, but the way they initially look like they won't fit and have no gap in the heel when you first align the boot makes me nervous, like i'm just forcing the boot in there and it won't release appropriately.

Is that a real concern or should it be ok? I wonder if they were last mounted for a 310 but with the adjustment arm already opened up from center so actually dont have any room to go bigger, only smaller? Am I misunderstanding the adjustability and how that works?

Im assuming this is what NW_SKIER linked but on the app. When mine are adjusted to what I think is the correct forward pressure the heel moves back two or so mm as I’m stepping in. Sounds like you’re probably ok.

I've found that the indicator on Pivots does jack shit. Adjust by feel. There is a huge thread here in tech on it. I have one set of 15's that is showing the third line, but they adjusted up and ski fine.

Quick and dirty: your heel should be just touching/putting slight pressure into the heel cup when you put the boot in place. Snap the boot in and make sure the dildo comes all of the way up. You shouldn't have to pull up on it. Once the boot is in, stand on the ski and rock the boot forward. If the brakes begin to drop you need more forward pressure. Add a couple of clicks to each side and try again.

I start loose where the brakes move pushing on the boot, then tighten pressure until I can't get the brakes to drop. Once they no longer drop I usually add one or two more clicks.

Thanks all! These are close... I messed around a bit more based on that thread and your feedback. In order to get that snapping dildo on step in, the arm is adjusted so you can see most of the third line. Hopefully that's not bad, otherwise i think i'm set!

I thought pivots were +/- 7mm. You probably wonít die with 8mm out, even assuming that the initial mount was that precise, but youíre probably right at the end of adjustability.
    focus.

Question about pivots. Is there a way to check that the toe height is to spec?

Most bindings I target a toe height where I can just barely pull a piece of paper out from the AFD.

For my pivots, the toe piece is so snug that it tilts forward a few mm when the boot is clicked in - this creates a very tight interface with the AFD.

If your toe piece tips a few mm your forward pressure is too much. It will tilt a little bit but not much.

There are several good threads here on this topic (with photos).

The key takeaway is to study those photos and comments and don't depend on the indicator.

[edit]It's your lucky day. Here's one key thread: https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...-the-indicator[/edit]

I'd say there's more like 11mm TOTAL adjustment range (+/- 5.5mm). There's absolutely no way there's a 22mm range. If you set the length to its midrange (use the etched marks) and find that you're WAY off, I suspect a remount is in order.

Which AFD and which boot soles are you using?

Standard ISO 5355 (Alpine). These are the circa 2015 pivots with 5mm binding delta, where I think they only came in alpine norm.

I'll check fwd pressure which currently is set based on the line/white marker.

Yep. Ignore the line. Feel the dildo. And the thunk
Iím astounded that the front binder would move. But I guess with enough dildo pressure anything can move.

Yep. Paper or thin card friction is the way.
    You got this.

Unless you need to mount the dildo further back

I laughed. It's all true, though. If the dildo makes your toes tilt, pull back.

My first pair of alpine skis had look 37's and the shop guy told me the way to set them was to increase forward pre-load until the boot toe stopped returning to center when the toe was twisted and then back off until it did

does this in any way pertain to /happen with Pivots ?
