RIP Ammon Mcneely, The El Cap Pirate

He didn't die climbing, he didn't die BASE jumping, sounds like the peg-legged El Cap Pirate just lost his footing at the edge of a cliff in Moab trying to enjoy a sunset with his girlfriend, tragic end. One of the OGs. Can't have a climbing forum on here and not have one mention of this.

    Arrrrrr-IP to the Pirate

I heard the edge of the cliff gave way, not that he lost his footing. In any case an ironic way to go for a guy who took the kind of chances he did.

Kind of weird to go back through his old Instagram posts from 2013 and read Dean Potter's comments on there.

Reminiscent of Erik Roner dying doing a cheap stunt at a charity golf tournament. Just terrible.

Not that it matters, but looks like his sister posted this on MP "Ammon’s motorcycle was parked. He walked out onto a precipice with his girlfriend and another friend to enjoy the sunset. As Ammon was trying to sit down, he lost the footing under his prosthetic leg, and fell backwards off the cliff.

A friend was videoing the sunset, and clearly captured everything that happened. Yes, I’ve seen the video. There’s no need for further speculation. ☮️

Well, there you have it. Thanks.

Funny thing, in 15 years of climbing the closest I came to dying was tripping and falling off a large but exposed ledge at the base of a sport climb. Seemingly innocuous moment suddenly turned deadly. I got lucky.
