I remember fall of 72 or 73 first year of pee wee hockey that's who the coaches referred to a lot... He was the gold standard as well.

I always thought of him when I watched slapshot. Not the Hanson brothers
The coach. Washed up and beat up. Toothless but scrappy.

As a kid he and Bobby Orr were the best of the best. Loved watching them do the ice dance.

As a Wings fan I was never a fan of Bobby. But Brett helped us win a Stanley Cup, so thanks for that Bobby.

Seriously. While I didn't know him personally, or anything about his personal life, he was a hockey idol of mine. I put him right along side of Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, Brad Gilbert, Dennis Potion and Guy LaFleur

I actually wasn't being sarcastic. If a guy is a piece of shit, I don't think he should be glorified when he dies, but that's often what happens.
