just posted this love letter to the rip 96 on another thread...thought I'd add it here as well to increase the love...
"I ride the 180 green 96's and they are a dream. demo'd them at Snowbird and fell in love. tried the 106's (since i was skiing the head collective 105 previously...also a super fun ski) but found them a bit too stiff and less responsive. i'd prefer to have wider underfoot, but rip 96 skis fatter than they measure. awesome all mountain ski...now looking for an approx 120 underfoot for the truly big days. even so, rip 96 did well in 6-10 inches in CO last week. wish i could help you with the rip 96, but keeping mine. just wanted to share my VERY POSITIVE experience with them. hope you find a good deal..."

Griff what year was that? From what I gather, the 2021 RS106 got stiffer.
And some people have said the 2018–2020 RS106 is much softer. Lots of love for the 2021 and on.
Anyway, you should buy these skis so I don’t have to!

i demo'd both last winter, 2022, at the peruvian at alta...i am guessing they were 20/21's, but not sure. re: these skis, i need something wider than 106 to round out my 2 ski quiver. i have not skied the rip 116 (or whatever the next/tip width up is)...anyone have any intel on those?
cl1953 - do you know what year these 106's are? for people considering, the 106 is a GREAT all mountain (especially West) ski. i am 53 and not getting any younger, so needed something just a bit more forgiving, so went with the 96.

here's another good post from the other rip thread...

Have never ski'd the 96s but can't imagine they can do much better than the 106s, and figure there's a whole lot they won't do as well.
Just my 2 cents....."

I’ve got the 96 setup with AT and the 106 NTN telemark. The 96 is light and damp and is a fantastic all mountain ski which handles many conditions well. It does suffer a bit with flotation in deeper snow because it is only 96 after all.
I run the 106 daily here in the Wasatch and it delivers in virtually all conditions. It’s light, damp, holds an edge and floats well due to the tip rise and beautiful taper. The ski does have a speed limit on big resort days and for that, I choose a different ski- 4frnt Renegade.
I took the 116 out for a day and thought it was a little slower edge to edge and did not offer a meaningful upgrade from the attributes of the 106. If I’m gonna get a ski that wide, it’s going to be a rocker rocker ski for powder specific pursuits - aka the Renegade noted above.
Overall, the Ripstick line skis short, is extremely quick edge to edge and offers a very damp ride for how light it is through all sorts of snow. The only complaint I’ve heard, which really isn’t a complaint, is that they’re too traditional and perhaps “boring”.
I like to say my 106 Ripsticks are stable, reliable and predictable and as close to a one ski quiver that I have found.

I need to reduce the amount of skis or keep the total at the same number.
CL, I would trade my og devs plus $100 for your elans.
I’m in SLC too.

jmedslc - nice overview of the rip line. very helpful. love to get your advice on filling out my 2-ski quiver. happy to take this discussion offline, in another forum, or keep it here...I am new to the forum and not sure how this all works...my rip 96's do almost everything really well. I am former east coast racer and ski pretty much everything, but usually prefer tight/slalom/not superfast skiing in most all conditions - eagles nest at alta or the trees in and around tiger tail at snowbird may be my favorite "runs" in the world. my rip 96's can handle almost all, except in the deepest of powder. plus, when it gets deep, we usually head to the more open terrain until things get chopped up...so i am thinking a 120 underfoot and have been looking at some renegades on this forum. what do you think of the renegade in this context? too surfy for a skier with my style and the turns I usually make -- even in Cirque or other open terrain, I am usually making 2x as many turns as most everyone else (figure eights). I don't need/want a bomber that makes just 2 turns down a big face/bowl, that's not how I ski. plus, I will ride the the rip 96's 80% of the time. the renegades sound pretty well rounded to me, and not quite as specialized as say an Armada JJ...but haven't skied any of them...again, love to get your thoughts and happy to move this discussion if needed.

I have two pair of the 106. It is my almost everyday day ski at Alta. Performs so well in all conditions. Never fails me.
I’m keeping the old worn pair. The pair for sale I got last spring for my son who has since changed his mind. This pair is in great shape.
I believe it is a 18/19 model, but could be 19/20.
Somebody make an offer!Battle lines being drawn, nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong, old people speaking their minds, getting so much resistance from behind.

Sorry to keep up the hijacking of this thread, but what lengths are you guys skiing (and what are your heights, weights, etc.), mainly for the 106? Blister measured the 106 188cm at 183.8cm tip-to-tail, which seems excessive in terms of over-reporting a length. Normally, I would get the 180-ish length, but if the 180 is really a 176, I might reconsider.

You could go either way. My 177 M105s were longer than my 181 Ripstick 106. Elan drastically mismeasured these skis. I think the longer ones would probably bust through chop better but be a little less quick. They are light skis that ski short so make of that what you will. Excellent hardpack ski that also performs well in light snow. All that said I really like them for my relatively small local area. I do not use them as a DD at Big Sky because I want something heavier and more damp there. 5'8" 155
