What makes it a vest? From the pics I see online, it looks like a backpack. What am I missing?

My old BD pack blew out a zipper, so I'm looking for a replacement...

I think it's called a vest because there is no hip belt, and there are pockets on the shoulders straps.

Yeah. It's sweet, having all the easily accessible storage on the shoulder straps is great and it carries very well for more moderate loads.

I've used mine for long day tours in the spring. Pretty nice and very stable while skiing.

yes, it is similar to a running vest in that there is a high and a low chest strap but no hip belt. and awesome pockets on the shoulder straps

    OP - how big are you? I’m normally between a M and a L at 6’1”, 170

This also makes a great bag-within-a-bag for NA style hut trips. It is really light and serves double duty as a tool organizer while residing inside your larger bag.

The vest aspect is certainly associated with not having a hip strap as mentioned before, but it also has adjustable side lacing and two sternum straps with a more front of chest rather than hanging from the shoulders feel.

i'm about the same (6'1" and 175lb). the sizing is just based off lower rib circumference. if you have a bigger chest than me it may fit you.
