I'm most surprised that they weren't stripped/burned/shot up.

Shit left that long here on crown land would have the Environment guys (Conservation) contracting someone, likely the local heli company, to remove, and if of value, then put up for auction.

Local heli guy lifts a few broken sleds out of the backcountry each year. Some have insurance, some don’t. Usually about a $5G bill. The sleds are usually worth well north of $15000 though.

e.g. Law doesn't apply to me.

I think a version of marine salvage laws should be enacted on public land.

Didn’t see anyone else’s name in the case though. Can’t hook a chopper to a load without someone on the ground….

Not sure if it still happens, but not too many years ago it seems, I'd see abandoned snowmobiles all along the road up Kebler Pass from Crested Butte side. Just sitting there in the grass not far from the road.

Seems to me that while it may be a bro code honor system among the locals, anyone could have just taken them.

I guess I just view him as a shady tow-truck operator, he just has a fancier rig.

Around here the USFS would probably be stoked to have abandoned property (aka trash) removed from their land.

Well, the snowmobile dude apparently tried a number of things to get them out, to no avail. (Contacted FS, etc)
He was supposedly waiting until there was snow again, and the heli dickbag stole them over the summer.

Well, the best part of this whole story is that he put them back. So the snowmobile guy gets to do the whole permit/hire a helicopter thing all over.

The last few heli pilots I have met weren't the cream of the human crop.
The whole human race is de evolving; it is due to birth control, smart people use birth control, and stupid people keep pooping out more stupid babies.

However, he didn’t put them back in the same place, and won’t say where, if I read correctly.
In other words, littering of stolen property.

On Dec. 10 at 4:48 p.m., Chambers called Smith and stated that he returned the two snowmobiles to their original location. When asked how he returned them, Chambers said he was directed by counsel not to speak any further.
I think he just wouldn’t tell the LEOs where they are after his lawyer told him to shut up.

I personally was taught to just not take things that aren’t yours, which has served me pretty well over my life. Seems like that simple philosophy could have saved both these guys a lot of trouble.
