Ski Area Entitlement-will it ever stop?

Alright, first off, I love skiing- both area and backcountry. I've been riding chairs and hiking for turns for the past 33 years in Colorado and New Mexico. I'm saying this not as an ego booster, but more of to give following posters a hint of my perspective on things-I've been around for a while.

Sometime in the recent past, Telluride decided to replace good ol' chair 9. This is a key chair at that area. It serves great runs and also enables skiers to get to chair 6 and the gold hill chair, along w/Palmyra Peak area.

Last season here in the San Juans was a poor winter. It started off slow and ended like a lingering fart. It seems to me that T-ride would've had ample time to install the new chair 9 well before the beginning of this season. Did that happen?-- NO. At this time, Chair 9 is still not operable-as far as I know. Last I read, they planned to have it running sometime in late Jan. of 2023.

My gripe is that, knowing this key chair wouldn't be running at the start of this season Telluride should've given all ticket buyers and pass holders a hefty discount to just say, "Hey everyone, sorry for the major inconvenience and lack of terrain." I know this is not the norm, but it should be.

Some may say, "just don't go there then, or stick to the backcountry..." Yeah, these are options, but one of the reasons I bought days to ski T-ride is for when the avy danger in the Juans is spiking-plus when I want to ride some steep, lift served terrain.

Is this kind of thing happening at other areas-and if so, WTF- ski area entitlement= no bueno...

So chair 9's opening date has been pushed back a few weeks? That sounds standard with the way things have been going since covid no?

Honestly, I'm not sure if this is a ski area entitlement issue or the skier.

You're going to be alright. Everything is ok. Remember, there's people with real problems, people are at war right now, there's people starving and sucking dicks to score heroin. Shit gets way more fucky then not being able to ride the brand new 8 million dollar chair lift for a few more weeks.

I assumed this was about guests, not management.

I thought lift ticket price was an afterthought for those that visit Telluride. I moved to Colorado in 1999 and Telluride was already blown out. They have a niche thatís their own, I canít imagine anything will change that. Do you think they lost any revenue over this perceived oversight?

My experience having skied at and had season passes at many different hills: This is how every ski area has operated for as long as I can remember.

Fact is both Poma and Doppelmayr both way over sold lifts last year. They sold more than they could install with their employment level and supply chain issues also slowed everything down. This was all super obvious to anyone whoís read the news in the last few years. Yet ski area GMs still bought lifts (theyíve been making crap loads of money the last few years) and the lift manufacturers kept telling them theyíd be done on time. When anyone who had their eyes open could see it was all a charade.

Still waiting for Red Dog to be finished (and Far East to run) at Olympic Valley. It will be nice when they open, although with the parade of storms it may be a while. Not to mention the Base to Base Gondola, which will be a huge benefit for those with lockers at Oly or AM who want to ski the other resort without taking a bus. Those folks must really be sufferring. It won't matter in a few years when it stops snowing below 10K feet, although I imagine they'll still sell IKON passes to those who hope the snow will come back.

Such a grand title for such a trivial issue.

I was at Steamboat once and they had run out of hot chocolate - a pretty unforgivable oversight.

I was bitching about the fixed grip 3 person Red Chair at Bachelor on Wed. It wasn't running because a bunch of snow melted and created a pond. Not once did Bachelor offer to give anyone a free ride on Red if they could skim across said pond. Truly a sad state of affairs with ski area management.

Yup. My understanding is Doppelmayr had staffing shortages and then the very wet summer we had put them further behind schedule for this project. I'd like to see the resort do something about it, but Telluride doesn't exactly go out of their way for their passholders.

They did say on Facebook today though that they hope to at least get terrain on that side open soon.

Agree, mostly at least. I mean, I donít know exactly how many people are sucking dicks for heroin at any given time. Iíll take your word for it. Iíve lived a sheltered life in that respect (some might say entitled I guess) but itís exactly the kind of information I rely on TGR to provide so I donít have to do the legwork myself- so to speak.
