Dammit, Max. RIGHT when I was considering dumping the service, they lure me right back with this one. They're at least tempting me to continue.

I can’t decide how I feel about this. It seems more GoT than Dune, but I am definitely going to watch it

Absolutely, but that's a big part of the appeal for me! Then again, isn't GoT kind of a medieval/fantasy sort of Dune? I mean, you got all the big houses, the political drama, the behind the scenes masterminding and sneakiness, the complete and utter, murderous obliteration of rival houses, etc., etc. Right?

Heck, throw out the space ships and ornithopters, and it's absolutely medieval. One of my favorite SF semi-genres is a combined feudal/empire context with a sprinkle of advanced technology combined with primitive savagery. Takes a truly talented writer to pull it off, though.

    Sounds like Knot's Landing.

I don't know what the hell's going with the suits over at Max, but they've been on a bit of a tirade lately, axing all sorts of good content while renewing tons of garbage. They apparently put the kibosh on the next season, but in an interesting twist of events, Netflix just picked the rights to the show, so looks like we should eventually get a chance to see what's in store for what's left of the crew of the Demeter! Season 1 concluded quite nicely IMO with juuust the right amount of cliffhanger. Where you're not left feeling frustrated but look forward to the next chapter. The creators did a great job with that.
I don’t currently subscribe to HBOMax…however it’s coming to NF 5/31, so I’ll get back to you about it in the NF thread after I binge it.

Can't blame you. Unless Dune: Prophecy ends up being REALLY good, then don't bother. Max has been pissing me off lately with their recent and upcoming massive purges of their dwindling movie catalog. Went to watch Goldfinger the other day and saw it said "Leaving Soon" or something like that, and ends up they dumped like half the Bond movies last year and dumping the rest of them end of July. Tried looking for Thunderball and ends up NOBODY has it available for streaming without a rental fee. Thankfully I did some digging in my closet today and found it (and the rest of the Bond films) in my own stash so crisis averted, but still annoying. [once again making the case for physical/backed up media, eh?!]

On top of their increasingly pathetic film library (which sucks because it USED to be really good), they've been ramping up ads big time. When I first tried it out, there were maybe a couple ads per movie, and now it's as bad as watching it on cable TV. Good thing I subscribed with a black friday special for $3/month, but now that the 6 months is probably up, I think it's time to pull the plug on them.

Max is axing amazing stuff like Scavengers Reign which was very well received, while renewing garbage like Velma which pretty much nobody likes. They're also throwing money at tons of trashy reality shows which I also mostly hate. On the flipside, Paramount+'s libary is actually proving to be pretty good for the price. They also frontload the commercials on movies so you can watch the movie uninterrupted, which is nice.

Watched Aniara last night. Swedish sci-fi about a spaceship to Mars that goes off course. Thought it was great. Not a special effects driven thing; more of a bleak commentary on humanity that happens to be set in space.
