Artemis - To the Moon and Beyond

    Go time!

Why should we explore the universe? Because it's there.

Stoked for the scientific discoveries, technology and inspiration that will come from this.

... 'cause this rock is eventually gonna kill us. So might as well start looking.
    ---------------------

There are other things that will happen along the way, of course. In about 5 billion years, the Sun is due to turn into a red giant. The core of the star will shrink, but its outer layers will expand out to the orbit of Mars, engulfing our planet in the process. If it's even still there.

One thing is certain: By that time, we won't be around. In fact, humanity only has about 1 billion years left unless we find a way off this rock. That's because the Sun is increasing in brightness by about 10 percent every billion years.

That doesn't sound like much, but that increase in brightness will end life on Earth. Our oceans will evaporate, and the surface will become too hot for water to form. We'll be about as kaput as you can get.

Yeah, I didn't mean to bum you fuckers out, but we're really living in Earth's golden age. If the Caroline Gleichs of the world had a wider perspective of things...

As a Boeing employee I'm really hoping for a successful launch tonight. We need some good news.

This rocket/spacecraft/launch was our dinner table discussion last night with our 8 y/o son, a perfect age to be totally geeked out about space exploration. He was pumped.

    Really excited about this!

I don't work for NASA, but I'm contracted with them to work the navigation algorithm system/design for the Orion Artemis programs. I didn't have a ton to do with Artemis 1 -- I'm more focused on Artemis 2 & 3, but it's still very exciting.

If it didn't mean going to Florida I'd love to see a launch in person someday.

I don’t believe that we’ll find an analogue to this planet through space exploration. We’ll likely never get beyond our own solar system, let alone outside the galaxy, with human space flight.

Even if we were able to with some sort of giant space vessel or suspended animation, the scale would be too small to propagate our species.

This. I saw a Shuttle launch once. Now I need to see one of these. Except Florida. And specifically that part of Florida.

You know darn well the emphasis is on extractive potential from these other moons, planets, etc.

Especially when they bring back some alien bacteria. I've seen the movies. It doesn't end well for the humans.

It was like a sprinter coming off a block. So much power!

This podcast has a great discussion on the risks, opportunities and Why? of going to the moon and beyond:

I was your son’s age as the Gemini Project was wrapping up and the Apollo Project was starting. Every kid (boys at least) knew the names and stats on every single Astronaut.

Good to hear your kid is stoked like we were.
