There are fancy triggers but this time just got lucky standin on the porch. Hand-held, finger on the button.

Set focus/ap/iso/shutter to be about right first, so the snap is without any delay, then just tried a couple times.

It was an active storm! Felt the static when I stepped outside, which put the brakes on walking around for better views . Got a hit really close to the house, like within 100m. Pre-zap static fingers lit up the block all purple then BAM

Damn! I hope the sky grounds all that static before shit dries out.

I remember a weird thundersnow storm that brewed up when I was backcountry skiing one time. We could all hear this weird buzzing from the metal avy gear (shovel handles, probes, etc) in our packs from the ambient static electricity or something. Was super spooky and there was nowhere to hide so we just skied down really fast

Had that happen to me on a Spring ski tour way up in the alpine in the Wallowas. Absolutely no where to hide as storms suddenly rolled over the surrounding ridges. Metal was buzzing and cracking like crazy. Chucked our packs and skis on the ground 100' away and crouched on our sleeping pads as strikes landed all around. I will never forget how scary that was.

Been annoyed at the road closure. Wonder if they'll keep it closed longer now.

At least it burned during wet ass spring, not crispy August.

Hopefully not. At this point it seems like they just need to do an investigation and then fence off the area. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if they extend the closure, but not sure why they'd need to.

I predict someone done fucked up during the construction. Electrical maybe?

maybe my cynicism for all things NPS showing through.

they didn't need to close the whole road just for the lodge reno, either, IMO

At least for vehicles the feds are self insured. I wonder if that's the case for buildings as well? It sometimes feels like the most risky thing you can do with an old building is renovate it and risk pulling a Notre Dame cathedral.

It was kind of a shitty lodge and not really a historical specimen anyways, so now they'll have an excuse to build something better? Or not. (Idk what the planned renovations were).

I agree. The building itself wasn't exactly majestic. The big problem is that you know it's going to take the government forever to design and build a replacement and that's a very popular area.

Another bummer is they were just finishing the $11 million renovation of the lodge. Money's gone now. Hopefully new building focuses on energy efficiency so it will have a long use-life.

Decent insurance coverage should be enough to fund most of a replacement, assuming the NPS protects it's assets. The road and access at heart o' the hills has been shut off til the renovation was to be completed. If there is no lodge and no restrooms, they might be compelled to keep it closed or put a small fleet of porta-potties up there. Not good

The building renovations weren't slated to be completed until next year, though, so I think they were already planning to have temporary facilities in place for this summer. Hopefully that plan can continue.

I’ve been skiing this area since ‘91 and this is by far the least amount of snow I’ve ever seen on the second day of pass opening.

Skied Red Mountain this morning. Really nice for May 12th. Upper slopes were smooth and relatively pollen free. There is still plenty of snow to ski from the car up commonwealth.

PNW 2022/2023 Season - It's Triple Dip La Niña Time!

Is anyone planning to get out this weekend/ or have beta on recent conditions? I’m out of town on family stuff but hoping to get up high when the freezing levels recover a bit. Fingers crossed.
