Even at Summit right now a 2hr private lesson is running $369 + tax.

Which one of you dudes were skinning up skyline in an unbuttoned Aloha shirt yesterday? It was kinda like seeing a Sasquatch, so many questions.

North facing bowls up high were good, lower down was sketchy with the mid day warmup.

    This thread needs more Riff.

Someone posted this old photo of the Mount Pilchuck ski area in a Facebook group yesterday (Ski the Northwest). Bring it back!

If you look at the topo map of Pilchuck there is tons of steep terrain. It could be a similar mountain to Alpental. Even the current trailhead elevation is just about the same as Alpental's base. I know snowfall consistency was a problem at the previous Pilchuck ski area, but perhaps snowmaking could mitigate that somewhat. I know the previous area had a lift below the parking lot, and that just seems too low to me. The current trail climbs 2,300 feet. I don't think you could put in a lift all the way to the summit, but there's still plenty of vertical relief to work with.

The snowfall problem is it's too far west of the crest to draw some cooler air in. E.g. snoqualmie pass gets 350" a year, but tiger mtn or even Mt Si 15-20 miles west at the same elevation gets 1/3 of that amount or less.

There are definitely problems. Not enough snow. Low quality snow. Maybe too weather exposed since there's nothing blocking it to the west. Perhaps too steep for a viable ski area, at least one that has more than a couple lifts. The positives are that it already has an access road (with that portion of the Mountain Loop already open during winter) and a lot of it is in a state park.

Looking at the Snotel sites, the closest two are Alpine Meadows and Skookum Creek. Alpine Meadows is at 3500 feet and currently has a snow depth of 66 inches. Skookum Creek is at 3,310 feet and currently has 48 inches. Both are situated are the far west side of the Cascades. Maybe the snow situation isn't so bad after all.

Crystal was very good. Even just cruising around with the Mrs.

Steady stream of cars on 410 when we pulled out of CRR at 8, lots filling when we pulled in.

Lines weren't too bad at all.

The Elk Italian sandwich was below normal standards though.

Xtal was great today. Nice to meet another mag(yellow FRS coat and Sierra Nevada GPOs)

couple laps out south to finish the day really sealed the deal.

Glad I left early for stevens, didn't see any of that mess and the lift lines were downright lovely. First couple laps under SC were indeed amazing but dang did the sun really do a number on the snow. Ended up spending the rest of the day hunting shaded spots.

Nice to finally have a quality day where the snow was fresh, the lines were short and the backside was open.

Crystal patrol really is amazing. I showed up at 11 with no signs that SB would open. Everyone I rode up with assumed they would not be opening it. But the bombs started firing after noon and I was standing on top of the King at 1:50. Other resorts would take the easy, lazy, route and wait until the next day to open such expansive terrain so late in the day.

They're getting stingier on the meat and more generous with potato chips whilst charging more $. Can I have your pickle?

I love that at Crystal Patrol. They will open terrain at 2:30pm on a Tuesday just to make 5 lucky skiers stoked.

OTOH - Mammoth patrol will “save” terrain on a Thursday and Friday for a Saturday opening for the hordes….

Rode Alpy yesterday. First time on the upper mountain since I've just been skiing nights until now. I grew up skiing Crystal, so nice to come back to a mountain where it seems like people are there for the skiing
