I think I saw a ghost this morning coming out of the clouds. The sun was out for about 6 hrs and the upper Mtn looks amazing. Currently the clouds have rolled back in and for my last run today it has started to snow as the next storm is pushing into the area.
Hangmans & Varmint’s looking about as fat as I can ever remember.
Dave’s & Top of the World look all time. Next chance got the Top maybe Friday?🤞🏻
Great morning skiing 18” of fresh pow.

Wow!!!!
Beautiful shots ESS. Are you using the 95 to get down? I know they're saying the 395 will be closed at Mono until sometime in April.
I have not skied any top lines since 10/11. I'm hoping this is the year I get back up there. I've only skied Chicken Balls and the easiest of the three chutes skier's left of Balls. I forget what that one is called. This season I'm hoping to get one of those, or maybe Kiwi Flat. I've never done Kiwi. I've always wanted to get it on the right day but I've never had someone to show me in!
We are driving up Thursday AM, skiing through Saturday or maybe Sunday. We are both busy enough that we SHOULD leave Saturday, but hypothetically if we were to die on Monday would we rather spend Sunday skiing or looking at graphs and charts on a computer screen? That's the justification I'm going to use if we stay for Sunday
The record should be toast soon. I am hoping for a bit of a break, just so the town can recover and deal with snow removal. If that happens it would be nice to have a few storms in April. Stay safe to everyone up there!"Have you ever seen a monk get wildly fucked by a bunch of teenage girls?" "No" "Then forget the monastery."

Need your advice. We are a Truckee family and PT skiers for the last 22 years. We have been doing a Mammoth/June spring break trip every spring break for the last 4-5 years. We have reservations at the Mammoth Racquet and Tennis club for 4/4-4/7. Even if 395 is still closed we are willing to do the scenic Nevada detour. But is it advised to go there? Or are you guys recommending less visitation in light of all the snow issues? We have issues in truckee, several grocery stores closed because of damage etc. should we go? We will be self sufficient but definitely spend some money at local establishments.

Mammoth Ski and Racquet club, I meant near the Canyon. We have stayed there before. Just trying to get some local opinions, have heard mixed things about locals discouraging visitation because of the big snow.

I'm not a local, but I've been here in Mammoth for the past 3 weeks, just skiing and sleeping in my car. Plenty of rough storms, but not bad enough for me to discourage visitation. Your April visit might go perfectly, OR you might face some glitches...
The glitches I've seen here haven't been so bad for skiing visitors, as far as I can tell. Like, set your expectations for possibilities such as: Your Canyons neighborhood could require chains/AWD snowtires for your WHOLE visit start to finish. And/or your neighborhood might have loud snowplows/trucks clearing out "old" snow all day long every day. Or Summit and CH23 might never open during your whole visit...or if they open after being closed for a week, well you'll be waiting in long lines for Gondola and CH23. Even on a rough storm day with extensive lift closures, CH22 often runs to offer some steeps along with other beginner/intermediate lifts. But Activities like tubing, etc. have been closed A LOT lately. And weird surprises can happen, like one day the library might just put up a CLOSED sign for the day, without even posting the closure on social media. Stuff like that. Many many families and little ones at ski school still having fun on the slopes throughout all the storms and wind.
P.S. Today, Mammoth officially announced they are extended daily skiing until AT LEAST July 31. So, the halfway point of the season was only 2 days ago! Wow!

We live in Truckee and ski Palisades. Kids are on Big Mt Teams, so we are dealing with all the same stuff here. The biggest thing we tell the tourists is to be prepared and have good snow tires or cables. We have been to Mammoth a lot in all seasons. On down days we usually try to go on hot spring adventures in the Owens Valley. Funny thing we got rain here at the end of the last big storm cycle. When it cleared out the mountains were a smooth mix of glaze and bullet proof ice. All the weekend tourists showed up expecting 10' of powder, instead limited terrain and slide-for-life conditions. But now we have had a bit of a refresh and skiing is softer wintery again.

The brief appearance of the sun on Monday made for a great day of skiing. Today (Tues) was back to norm for 2023 with more snow
(ski patrol sight currently showing 19" new), and strong winds that made for blizzard conditions at times and limited or shutdown lift operations.
I had a good day storm skiing from 11:00 a.m. til closing and found fresh lines all day with hardly anyone around. Here's a few pics from Monday & Tuesday.
Monday morning 1st run. Got off Roller Coaster and went straight to the "old chair 10 line". Untracked and deep.
Got off Stump just as they were pulling the closure off the back of ch 1. Snow was a fun mix of wind blown & fresh pow. I spent much of the rest of Monday lapping ch 22. Avie chutes were firing all of the rest of the day.
Last run up Canyon on Monday and one of the many roped off chair lines around the mtn.
It started snowing around 9:30 Tuesday morning and added up quickly. Winds came up fast and around 1:30 chairs 1, 2, 5, 6, 22 all went down for the day. Canyon exp & Gold Rush exp ran slowly but stayed open til closing and that was enough to get to some great skiing.
The new snow & wind buffed out the ch 25 area and it skied great til closing. Looking back up towards ch 25.
Skied this area all afternoon with hardly anyone else around. Winds were refilling it each time. Circuit was up Canyon, ski down of Gold Rush, take it up and push out to the ch 25 area and repeat.
Next lap. Storm days = best days.
After ski walk with my GF down Canyon Blvd. The snow banks are huge, roads are narrow, limited to no visibility. Be careful.

Mammoth is open for July! I am at New Shady for 10 days sprinkled throughout the month. Hoping some of the Mammoth mags will still be into touring and showing a Canuck around a bit. Any advice on lift tickets for my hill days? Do you need to buy ahead of time? Best way to save money? Do you guys figure it will be crowded at the hill or are most people over skiing at that time of the year?
I'm coming down from the great white north so forgive me if these questions sound dumb. I'm just trying to ensure that I hit the ground running when I am down there

What’s happening at Canyon? “Large scale emergency response” per their instagram….
-
03-22-2023, 11:38 AM #572
Re Canyon emergency, just read this on FB from Mammoth Times:
"There has been an explosion at the Val D' Isere condos (near the Village) in Mammoth this morning, March 22, 2023. We know there are multiple vicitims, we know some have been injured posibly seriously; we know there is a large response to the incident ongoing at this time (10:17 am) with roads like Forest Trail impacted by the response. We do not have full, concrete details at this time to share beyond that; we do have a lot of information that needs to be fact checked. More when we do that. MT"
And now, El Niño has been officially declared for the season of 23/24..

Holy shit. That's fucking insane....looks like that building got hit by and anti-tank round....
March 22, 2023, Mammoth Lakes, CA – On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at approximately 09:30am, Val d’Isere Condominiums located at 194 Hillside Drive, experienced an explosion. Upon arrival, first responders found a building collapsed next to the pool area. Two complex workers were visible with one needing extraction from the snow and debris. Both workers were transported to Mammoth Hospital for further evaluation. A man approached first responders stating that his wife and son were trapped in their residence. In order to reach them, Rescuers hiked around the northwest side of the collapsed structure. The son was located in the bedroom area, was carried out and transported to Mammoth Hospital for evaluation. The wife was located in the kitchen area and was transported to Careflight at the Mammoth Yosemite Airport. USAR Teams are currently on scene doing sweeps for any additional victims. Eastside K-9s are also on scene. This area is restricted, please avoid this area. For incident information contact Stuart Brown, Town of Mammoth Lakes Public Information Officer: (760) 914-7110.
