Oh, that's horrible. People coming to the mountain to have a nice vacation and it turns out to be the worst day of their lives. I can't imagine the psychological trauma to this person's wife.

We did have two friends show up to ski with us for a couple of days, really old school, no helmets. We strongly suggested getting helmets, she did, he didn't.

    MAMMOTH 22/23 - LIFE'S A BEACH

Big SW winds today are buffing out parts of the Top. Skiing is getting really good just as folks are leaving!

Yep today was great! Started of with great cord in the morning and chased the wind deposited snow in the afternoon. Skied directly on the lift all day. Well worth the extra hours of driving from the Bay Area.

Looks like a 1-2 punch starting on Thursday this week...Howard hasn't made any calls yet but it looks to be decent with a bias to more on the Thursday event...

Yep. High winds Thursday, but later in the weekend should be nice.

Thinking I might head up on Saturday to do some storm skiing Sunday and stay for the first half of the week. Hoping the winds aren't too wild on Sunday.

Howard's update distilled to non-weather geek:

    Late Thursday/Early Friday = Round 1.

Round 2: TBD but probably late Saturday/Sunday

Of note is lower freezing elevations so Thursday/Sunday could get messy on the roads but hopefully lighter snow on the hill but also cold/windy/AF.

My guess: Get up early Thursday to avoid the mess. Friday drive could suck serious shit. Getting home is big question mark. If I go I'm planning on coming back Monday...

Curious about the winds and avy control probability for this weekend. Will the storm slow enough between part 1 and 2 to get some decent skiing late friday/ early saturday or with mammoth likely be on wind-hold? Likelihood of gusts above 70mph?

Guess you’ll have to drive up and find out. Step one to scoring a killer pow day is putting yourself in position to score, i.e you gotta be there. JMO.

Weather has done a 180 from yesterday (Mon).
Winds have dropped to barely a breeze, clouds are gone and the sun is out. Life is good! Out on the hill spinning some laps. As I’ve posted before, “Mammoth mid week, non holiday.”

It’s getting lonely riding the Gondi alone all day. Not really.
I haven’t heard one blue tooth speaker. Today was a good day.
Post some snow pics later. Think pow!

Total country club skiing this morning for sure. ESS pretty sure I saw you on Sunday. Hard to miss the tall guy with pointy beanie making clean turns down 23. Just finished clearing the remnants of the last storm from the driveway. Getting psyched for this weekend. Must be present to win.

Anyone need a lift up from LA early Thursday? Only catch is I can't drive you back as the car will be full on that run...

Going to try and leave the South Bay around 8:30am

    MAMMOTH 22/23 - LIFE'S A BEACH

Good skiing the past couple days with the exception of Monday. Things are looking promising for the next couple of days to give the mtn a needed refresh. Here's a few pics from Sunday & Tuesday.

The Dropout line has some chalky winter snow in it. Skiing the Top after 2:00 pm is a challenge as it's shaded out and hard to see much.

Considering that it hasn't snowed in three weeks the skiing is still pretty good. I skied Pallisades (SV), Alpine and Mt Rose last week and the difference between Tahoe and Mammoth is night and day. Rose had 2 chairs open and three runs, at SV it was Gold Coast only and couldn't ski to the bottom (thats changed now), and Alpine had 4 chairs open & maybe 8 runs open. Groomers only, nothing off piste, with the effect of compressing everyone onto the same few runs.
Hopefully that all changes soon. Today looks sunny with building SW winds, then fingers crossed.
