There were snowboarders who were dropping in near me/you on our first run and they immediately were shrieking with joy - they hadn't even made a turn yet. I got the feeling it was their deepest day ever - which I heard people say a few times that day. Reminds me of a big first-of-the-season biggggg dump on The Ridge at Bridger one year - I dropped on and thought 'this is spectacular' and nearby but out-of-sight I could hear presumably freshman from the east coast or midwest shreiking and clearly in shock on how deep it was - cold smoke waist deep.
Just the vibe of everyone having the best day of the season or ever makes those days special, and yesterday was spectacular.
No thanks to guys like the Open Snow dude telling all the Ikoners how much it snowed here and helping to fill up the parking lots by noon. Border collie herding a buncha sheep...

he has a lot of nerve pushing that ski colorado message while serving as a megaphone for Ski Utah. I almost made a twatter to call him out but I chose mental health instead.
I wore myself out storm touring and hucking last week and these twilight pics are almost making me regret it

All the more reason I could see him wishing for it to stop snowing. I imagine big winters are a lot more work, a lot less sleep, etc.
Why do you guys look at (or even pay for?) Open Snow? This is the only true local forecast and Mike has been doing it for like 30 years https://www.weather.gov/slc/snow#tabs-3

Steenburgh has proven more accurate lately, but this is such a good resource. I dont pay for opensnow, you can see his 5 day totals and theres a lot of engagement on his twitter profile. Really im just a glutton for long range forecast discussion and snow porn

I don't subscribe so i don't know exactly what you are all referencing but I'm gonna give him a lotta credit for this joke:
This week has been crazy:
-Alta broke their all-time record
-Deer Valley broke their record
-Solitude broke their record
-Snowbasin broke their record
-Powder Mountain is only 15” away from reaching their 500” average for the first time ever.

I would say Steenburgh has always been more accurate, partially because he knows what he's talking about a lot more than the opensnow crew and partially because he isn't running a business selling weather-related advice.
Other than having a graphical interface that combines a few sources of info in one place, I don't see the point of opensnow after going through the trial period. I'd rather pull up 3 or 4 websites that I have bookmarked rather than wade through a write-up that combines massive amounts of hype with the prose level of a sophomore literature student..."Your wife being mad is temporary, but pow turns do not get unmade" - mallwalker the wise

It does make sense because PowMow has been lying about their average snowfall of 500" for years - that's the joke. On a record year they haven't even hit their supposed average.
Just scoped 3-4 tracks down Medusas Face put in today - they got at least one spicy slab to release in their line (worst case scenario IMO, jesus) and further down from that they bailed and made a long traverse out to safety to the top of Zeuss Chute (but didn't ski that chute). Cool to see from the backyard. Above-Lookers left to where they dropped in has a more beautiful aesthetically pleasing line laid in though, but I can't see more than a few turns before it's obscured by rock walls. God job, stranger.

That program is run by a different Mike (Wessler) under David Church. Mike Kok sends us a different forecast.
Did anyone hear what happened up in Morgan County today?
Edit from a quick google search, snow cat triggered avalanche.

Oh.
The thing with NOAA is they seem to go with model-based numbers without much interpretation whereas Jim always applies his own correction factors. Seems like the NOAA numbers x 0.7 or the Steenburgh numbers are the sweet spot.
Lately the NOAA synopses have become much more detailed though, maybe they have a new forecaster who is much more interested in detailing their forecasts? I also found the probabilistic version of their forecast recently (not sure how I missed that) and it seems to be a bit closer to what we've seen in the real world."Your wife being mad is temporary, but pow turns do not get unmade" - mallwalker the wise

Wessler took over the program last year I believe. Those probabilistic forecasts rolled out about a week ago.
