In Victoria B.C. today it was -5*C and over a foot of snow. Hardly anyone driving around (retirees and government workers all stay home) and few plows, but of course no problem for my Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road. Several stores were closed including 2 branches of the TD Bank that I tried to visit...Victorians are such (snow)flakes when it comes to cold and snow.

Bit cold for sure out there….-20 was the low last few days at our location. Cold-but not super cold…I had to abandon my truck and sleds as they froze over but I’m more worried about the lack of snow and the fact everyday the avalanche conditions are getting closer to no return for the season in this region without a miracle…Click image for larger version.

Same same over that way. Pretty much the only skiing is alpine there is very little snow to swoosh below tree line without a broken tib, fib, femur, a arm, ski etc….some good turns to be had but very limited and much research and thought needed to find it….

Yeah it’s super light from tree line down basically everywhere. Bummer start to the season and this persistent layer might just end it all.

potential snow in the weekend forecast, can only hope..

The only goood snow i've noticed since early november was bordering the 49th, so fernie/castle etc is a bit better than usual.

Figures that this is the year we picked to go early Jan... Flying into Calgary on the 1st.
Was planning to head to Golden, Kicking Horse for a few days...
Crazy cold aside, is it insanely low tide up that way? Should we point the car south and head for Whitewater, Red?

Damn. Flying to Calgary on Jan 13th for a trip at Sorcerer Lodge and then some time in skiing in Golden or Banff. Which area has a better snowpack for touring?

Golden will be better but not by much. Things can change in the 3 weeks though

wait until you land and see whats its actually like?

a quick rain storm in nelson can fuck them up and leave the rockies in great shape. Or other things.

just make plan A,B,C and see what you need to do 2 days out.

Riding the lifts at Fernie today was great but cold. No first hand reports on the backcountry.

Don't worry folks, it will start dumping soon. On Jan 9. When I leave to ski in France for 30 days. Where it rained to 2600m today...

I’m missing the whole season so I was fully expecting to have to suffer through a record-snow-best-season-ever type deal. Pleasantly surprised by how patchy local conditions sound so far. Sorry. I’m sure it’ll come good at some point.

Dumped the last couple days at Pano, more in the village( -16) than up top(-5).
My kid skied today and he reported acceptable.

2022/23 Canadian Rockies and related locations thread..

Managed to squeeze in 7 laps of the North American on my ‘last hour’ ticket at Norquay. Felt good after a 22 hour marathon drive from Smithers.

Coming down pretty thick here at Fernie for the last 3 hours.

Estimates were 8cm but I had 5 on my car within half an hour at the hill. Stoked for Christmas Day turns!

Place was empty i think i didnt not ski up to the chair or wait more than 1 person at all once out of base. Endless hero snow, and the rock radar was working until one fucking pivot in corridor over pre-skied snow somehow revealed a whole boulder.
Yeah, it's still thin as fuck.

Fernie was absolutely pumping today. Had some great runs, learnt I can’t ski in powder lol.
