Unrelated to footie…
About 20yrs ago we sent our 16yo daughter to a summer school in N Scotland. Family friend was a nurse there so we had an in.
About 2/3 of the way thru her time there I get a call
“Daddy, there’s a boy here who says he’s a prince in his country and wants me to come visit after school is over. I told him I couldn’t afford it and he said he would buy me a jet. Is that OK?”
I’m mentally running thru the countries that still have royalty, getting the feeling their traditions involve the trading of goats for brides…
“Do you think you can afford the fuel and insurance for this plane?”
“How much is that?
“If you have to ask, the answer is likely no”
About a week after this I get another call, from the school’s headmistress this time
“There has been an incident. A boy here was beaten severely because he was making innocent romantic advances to your daughter and another boy took exception”.
Turns out that then Crown Prince Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar (now Emir) was the kid offering her the airplane. He also turned his bodyguards on this other kid when she made eyes at him
“Did the bodyguards carry guns?”
“No - credit cards”
He kept calling after she returned home, wanting her to come visit him, but we put the kabosh on that. She did ring up a $1000 cell phone bill in the month after (our plan did not have free international calling) before we cancelled her phone for a few months.

France started out slow but came around. France maybe a contender to repeat. Can’t believe Argentina shit the bed and the keeper from Mexico had a brilliant save on the penalty shot. USA has their hands full with England.

The World Cup trophy has got to be the ugliest trophy in the world of sport. It looks like it was crafted with aluminum foil painted gold.

Agreed on both points. But the fact that France has the best unis I’ve seen so far is the more important one.
Usually Italy is the standard bearer for international uniform fashion, but since they lost to northern macaroon or whatever and missed the WC, France needed to step up, and they did.

Lots of opportunities in that one for the US. Would like to see them rip it a bit more on the first touch but what are you going to do?

It's not just the US, commentators have rightly said this of many of the teams, it's been a thing, too many touches, missed opportunities. Playing not to lose control has made for some flat results.
The US did very well to get a draw against the English, who were stellar against Iran, but at the same time very control oriented. The silly English fans can't give credit where credit is due, the US played a strong game.
I've watched almost every game this world cup, having found replays of all matches on TUBI, the free streaming app. I haven't watched much more than the finals since '86 when Maradona lead Argentina.I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. -אלוהים אדירים

OK, so we got our asses kicked by the Croats. Still, our first WC goal and a team that had to be taken seriously (ask the Belgians). Big success for canuckistan this time round. Made a bit of a soccer fan out of me.. WC 2026!!!
