Looking at the supermarkets in Truckee, people love to hate the new Raley's, because it is expensive and does not carry Doritos. But we are noting that over the last year, both Safeway and SaveMart have experienced super inflation to the point of ridiculousness. Simple things like bread, milk and basic stuff have increased 100% or more. Your basic bag of hamburger buns? $5 to $8. A quart of half and half, cheap store brand non-organic that used to be $2.79 is now $4.98. I went to buy a can of green chiles...the kind that were like $1.50, now $3.79. Honestly, as long as you are selective and look for sale items, I can shop just as easily at Raleys and spend about the same money. I can't get on the Grocery Outlet train. The basics like milk, cheese and meats are not all that much cheaper. Things like frozen goods and crackers are so hit and miss, you can't count on finding something more than one time.
I am guessing that we are going to be doing far more shopping in Reno at TJ's and WinCo in the future.

are they though? maybe to visit, but i would argue that any company that moves in on another company's long time lease like this is no better than walmart. i wish them the worst and will drive by them to go get the best chicken tenders on the planet at the savemart in Truckee. Fuck nuggets give me tenders!
edit- Although, unlike walmart, it does appear they provide a very good workplace and perks.
And when emerald bay is open I still do most of my shopping on the south shore. It is insane how expensive Tahoe City and especially Truckee are compared to South Lake Tahoe (seriously Truckee why??). Savemart was the cheapest on the north shore, similar to SLT prices. And they helped to keep safeway a little in check (Safeway's 4 for $20 deals are a direct response to savemarts 5 for $25 deals). That competition is now gone. We have 2 safeways and a future upscale market on the North shore now. If they were casinos that wouldn't be allowed due to the lack of competition.Last edited by powdork; 09-30-2023 at 01:21 AM.

I'm not going to pretend to know the backstory of how this all went down, I'm just saying the shopping experience at a Nugget Market is so much better than Savemart (and Safeway, Raley's, etc.). We have a Nugget in Sonoma and the butcher and seafood counters are ranked as some of the best in the country. It would be nice to have that kind of quality somewhere in North / West shore. The butcher shop next to 50/50 Brew is very good but small with limited offerings (they make killer sausage, tho). There's still the Savemart on 89 so that competition is still there to keep others in check.

Given that Lepistoir started this thread and it turned out pretty damn well, I think he should run it back.

They are considerably cheaper than safeway for pretty much everything I buy except wine and dog food. But I will agree a Savemart in Truckee keeps nothing in Tahoe City in check.
In addition to the Nugget Markets rumor, I also am hearing rumor of a complete teardown due to asbestos. That would mean an extended period with just safewaypowdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.

I don't worry about where I shop. I have my private chef handle that. And a lot of the food is flown in--lobster from Maine, chiles from NM, pizza from Naples (Italy, not Florida), dog food from Afghanistan.

Campus Tahoe City will be located on the shores of North Lake Tahoe, right across from the Commons Beach. This site is currently occupied by the historic Tahoe City Inn.
Our new Campus will be home to an evo store, evo Hotel, café, bar, service shop, art gallery and more.

I’ve stayed there. It was overpriced for what it was. It’s made to feel a bit rustic. Low/slanted ceilings in the rooms, simple bed that’s down low without a not ici le frame, small room, etc. They did have little ski lockers for each room though. The other businesses in the building are as much the draw. There’s a small skate park, bouldering gym, couple of ski shops, and a little coffee shop. It was priced way high in my opinion, especially if you just want to get a hotel room.

TAHOE 22/23 -THE YEAR OF THE (t)RAM
Looks like no Nugget, but musical grocery chairs w Safeway stealing savemarts location. Which makes me suspect that Safeways location is about to get bulldozed and redeveloped. Unless savemart can move in there.
“Safeway is excited to open a new store at 100 W. River Road in Tahoe City which will replace the current store in the Lighthouse Shopping Center. We look forward to revamping the building into a refreshed state of the art facility with aesthetic upgrades, modernized interior, and an expanded range of offerings designed to meet the evolving needs of our customers. We are proud to continue serving the Tahoe City community and anticipate the new store will open in the summer of 2024.”

Where is that quote from? Are they keeping the current store open until the move or will North Lake be down to just the one in Kings Beach?
