TAHOE 22/23 -THE YEAR OF THE (t)RAM

I believe that one slid big during January 2017 and crossed 89. Same day that bus was buried on alpine meadows road, I think.

I remember way back when the parking lots were always plowed and you could center punch Jake's solo all day without anything ever sliding. F-ing Ikon/Epic pass and STR's ruined everything.

Old timers had everything back in the day. Facets were not invented yet, surface hoar hadn't escaped the lab yet. Golden dayz. Just wait till Ice-Nine makes its appearance, hell will freeze over.

I feel like we’ve been dealing with persistent weak layers just about every winter for the past 10 years. Luckily, they haven’t persisted as a problem all season.

I am skeptical that the conditions needed for surface hoar to develop and get buried are more common, and not simply a level of detail that the average human cant recall from 20 years ago

Talked to my kid who is near Fairbanks doing AF survival training. The temps there are about the same as here at the moment.

Once the sun stayed around it was pretty nice. Found some stashes in Rock Garden and Horse Trails. Strawberry Fields holding good snow for the last two days.

Sadly, my trip and season are over after a great 3 days at Kirkwood for the weekend/Monday, and the Palisades yesterday and today. Midwest living is a bummer when ski season ends by April.

It is official, PTOV will be open until July Fourth. Maybe they get Headwall de-iced by then.

So my GF up on Donner Summit has a sick/dying coyote curled up in the enclosure below her deck just inside the entry way.
Her little dog ran right up to it barking like crazy and it barely moved.
She says it stinks and when poked with a broom stick, it just curls more and won't or can't get up or move.
She's called the Sheriff and Fire Dept and they both told her to call Placer Co Animal Control but she's been unable to connect with a live person.
Lucky for me she declined my brave boyfriend offer to put a bullet in it's head and scoop the carcass into a trash bag.
Suggestions or direct contact info for a live Animal Control hotline?

Try Truckee Animal Control, which is part of the PD--maybe they can contact Placer for her. And it wouldn't shck me if Placer contracts with Truckee for animal control on the summit.

I think it'll be good today, also. It was snowing pretty good yesterday afternoon and stayed cold. Headed over right after school drop-off.

Thanks. She gotta few return calls this morning but it had left overnight. Had to have come up the stairs onto the deck and jumped up on the snow Probably the same way he got in.

Also... In May, Alpine will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and Squaw will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

In other words, this is the May schedule:

    Alpine open Wed-Sun
    Squaw open Fri-Tues

It's hard to find in the link above, but it's there if you expand the May operations section and look at the chart closely.
