I still fondly recollect ripping hero slush at AM on a pair of Spatulas many springs ago. “Sun Spot” to “Ladies Downhill” (I think that’s what that run off Yellow Chair was called…it’s not listed on the new maps) to “Gunner’s Knob” was my line that I kept skiing over and over and over.

In terms of current condis off the Mt Rose Hwy, I finally got the full Chickadee Ridge experience yesterday: decent snow and little birds fitting around and landing in my open palm.
NW face was still a wee firm at the top around 10:30, but the middle-lower section was smooth corn.
S facing towards DP was okay at the top, but a bit sticky down low and in the shade was still firmish around 11.

    Hi all,

Long story short, I'm moving from Europe and Tahoe is going to be the closest mountain region for me next year. I know you guys are still skiing and it's a bit early to plan your next season but my season is over and I'm already way too excited for the next one (especially after seeing how much snow you got this year).

After doing a bit of reading I have a few questions you could help me with:
    - Do you have to buy the pass granting access to many resorts (Ikon, epic...)? Or can you save money by buying a season pass for a single mountain ?
    - what pass do you guys get? It looks like the resorts around the lake are split on the 2 big brands. I'm sure it's down to personal preference but still curious to know if there's better choice.
    - ski partners: long shot but do you guys get together to ski with newer members sometimes, I'll miss my french riding buddies but would be happy to meet new ones.
    - parking lot camping: is this ok over there? I won't be living close enough for day trips but this would be the best (read most affordable) way to come skiing.

    Thanks!

Yes there are two main passes, but ideally you get both. If it's easiest to get to the south shore you should go with epic (vail) which gets you heavenly and kirkwood. If you think you'll be heading to the north shore then you would want ikon which gets you palisades (resort formerly known as squaw and alpine meadows). There are versions of the epic which are cheaper (tahoe value pass). There are other mountains (sugar bowl, rose, and sierra at tahoe) that have their own passes but they aren't a whole lot cheaper.
Parking lot camping isn't really a thing. Palisades used to let you overnight park near the far east lift, and they may still. But the official stance is "No overnight parking per Placer County regulations". It still happens though at shopping centers throughout the area. Also, I'm picturing the bay area and people do day trips all the time.
Ski Partners? The RaxSki Tribe here that would love to shred some coolies with you.

Mt Rose Close was a dramatically smaller and mellower affair than past years —lottsa folks left around 2 and the last few hours it was empty enough that you could literally ride right onto the chair. But the hardcore hung around, so it was still a super swell time.
I met up with Thudder on the Slide Side at 9:30 and we did back-to-back Chute runs until noon. Took a long lunch and then reconvened on the main side at 2:00 and lapped Northwest and Lakeview chairs, took an obligatory adult beverage break at Timbers, then caught “last chair.”
Got pelted with icy firm slush balls at the top.
Then some dude broke out a bagpipe (!!!) and performed what he dubbed “A Lament For The Last Chair.” As they used to say in hip-hop circles circa 1987: it was dope!
Caught a glimpse of Turx and Cinders, too.
So, yeah, bagpipes and slush bumps for the win.

Oh boy... Both passes would be quite an investment! I don't think I can afford that. Is there a date where there's a price hike on the passes?

I'd rather avoid the day drive if I could. So anything north of Truckee or South of Tahoma could potentially allow campers? It's just that I've looked at temporary accommodation and prices are pretty wack!

Raxski? As in this https://youtu.be/35R49lLFDkY? Hopefully not... Where are those guys?

    Couple of other things:

You might think that logically mega passes are much more expensive than passes to a single hill, this isn't really the case. They are close or often much cheaper.

Day tickets in the US are insanely expensive compared to Europe. Get a pass.

Traffic to the resorts is really bad on weekends mid winter. I have a friend who spent 3 hours getting from Palisades to Truckee last winter.

If you get an ikon pass for next year you can use it to ski this spring and summer too (Palisades, Mammoth)

Camping at ski resorts no, but there are a lot of other places you can get away with it if you stay out of the way. Some secluded roads, grocery stores etc. Best place is sno park lots (not all allow car sleeping, so do your homework). In all cases be careful not to interfere with snow removal if it's snowing while you are up there.

Check back when you have some specific ski plans and I bet you can find people to link up with.

North of Truckee potentially yes, south of Tahoma no. South of Tahoe, yes. Overnight parking is typically allowed at sno parks, but not those within the Tahoe basin or at Donner Summit. Blue Lakes is a good one and Carson Pass is closer but much weatherier. I'm not familiar with those north of Truckee.

My bad. I thought Rax were from France, but it's Austria.

ikon is the win for extended springtime turns, especially on a year like this.

They are all the suck for traffic and parking coming from the bay tho.

Hard choice to make as you aren't here and haven't made connections where you live yet. Having friends at home on the same pass is clutch, for carpools, and ski lease/couchsurfing.
It's almost worth the wait to pay a little more later to see who you connect with locally and see where they go.

The only season pass worth considering is Granlibakken.

Sorry we missed you mang. Managed to spot Spats, and had a few runs together, bemoaning the mammy-minis of yesteryear.
It was kind of a disappointing day for us, what with chilly wind and cloudy/overcast. We arrived late, so the Chutes closing at noon sucked big time.
"Afraid of wet slides"? Bullcrap! Hardly even any slough running. Man I've seen streams of slough running down steeps like Chute 75, or Keyhole when open in spring [emoji35]
    Oh well...

^Naw, imho they made the right call closing The Chutes at noon.
Thudded and air lapped them until he had to jet just around noon.
We were kicking off slough and I wasn’t fond of having people above me as the were dislodging chunks and whatnot. Also quite a bit of the snow on the sides was rotten so much so that so saw more than one person punch through, have a ski get stuck, and get tossed.

Had a great day yesterday w early ups for the Mikey Costello memorial at the formally world famous resort. Over 50 instructors and friends gathered to make some turns for mike.

If you have a couple bucks to spare to toss I tonhis legacy fund, future instructors would appreciate it.

The percentage of instructors he had trained was pretty amazing

    Made DP closing day today.
Met up with Vets and a coupla my non-mag Incline dwelling compadres.
    Skied from 10-1.
Found stashes of corn and speed cream cheese, some crusty bits due to the wind, and a smattering of pasty taters.
But it was empty and we pretty much skied right onto the lifts the whole time we were there.

Vets enjoying the off-piste tatery goodness:

DSR is open weekends for the foreseeable future.

Thinking we might have to reignite the DSR Mini, as it’s been awhile…

4 or so inches of dry snow up top at OV this morning. Better than expected- especially where they groomed (Shirley) before the storm came in.

Pet peeve: it’s spring and mid week. The parking lot is 2/3 empty, you don’t need to park so close to the back of my truck that I can’t even put the bed down and have to move it forward to put my skis away. Third time it’s happened in the last few weeks.

I like it when people park close to the back of my Suby. Nice to kick back sitting on the back with my boots on the hood of their car.

Thanks, more for powder? And good edge hold when it's firm?

I believe Niko schirmer skis on these and from his videos, it seems he's able to shut down speed instantly and also slide down a narrow couloir without having to put his skis perpendicular to the fall line. In other words, his skis are at a 20 degree angle and he's able to slide down the couloir. Which on my vwerks katanas or mantras, it's not super easy.
