According to the National Ski Areas Association, the skier visits to the Far West area is slightly higher (maybe 10%) now than in the nineties. This year I assume will be the highest on record since it is both very busy and will be a long season everywhere out here.

Don’t worry, if Zuck/Meta succeed in their AR vision, the Bay Area folks will soon shred the gnar from the comforts of their living room. Many environmental problems would be solved if more people became gaming addicted

Obviously they would have to provide and operate the buses, if and when Caltrans creates a dedicated bus lane, if and when Truckee or someone builds park and ride lots. Assuming the buses will be free the transit district will not have the revenue to expand service so the money will have to come from the counties, from Alterra, from Truckee, from the state, maybe from the feds (infrastructure bill? electric buses?). In projects like this that involve multiple public and private entities, the entity most affected normally functions as the lead agency. In Truckee the rail underpass west of downtown and the mousehole pedestrian tunnel were multi-entity projects where the town was the lead. For a tranportation project along 89 I would think Placer County would have to be lead.
Someone said that part of the reason the traffic backs up earlier than it used to is that more people leave for the hill earlier than people used to. I agree this is part of the problem. Certainly not the whole problem.
If, as seems likely, the US goes the way of Japan population and demographics-wise, the problem will solve itself. We will be talking about how long the wait list is for assisted living.

TAHOE 22/23 -THE YEAR OF THE (t)RAM
What really gets me is that so many people who come to Tahoe are unimaginative with their ski vacation options. Getting to Tahoe resorts on a busy weekend now is worse than your commute. Instead of driving to Tahoe for a week of skiing, why don’t Bay Area folks fly to some other resort and stay on or near the hill. If they avoid the super expensive resorts (deer valley, Jackson, telluride) it will actually be cheaper than Tahoe and maybe even easier to get to. How do I know? I did that last year.

Many many do. For instance you, Slay the Gnar and his family.
To be fair though, you can still drive from Reno airport to Stateline easily 99% of the time even in the worst storms. But then you can be stuck on storm days as the gondola is closed, Ski Run and Keller have accidents, buses shut down and power is out on the Nevada side.
You also have to consider air travel hasn't been without it's headaches lately, so some folks may be reticent to do that as well.powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.

I remember sitting in the line for the turn off to Squaw in 1990 or so, backed up almost to Truckee. Said fuck this and never went back. None of this is new

Anyone who doesn’t think things are different now compared to even 7-8 years ago is full of shit or has a poor memory. Not going to discuss the specifics because they’re obvious.
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

Good point on air travel being tougher. But I still wonder why so many people from the bay or the Sacramento valley are willing to pay a ton money for an STR at Tahoe Donner or SLT and then drive 2+ hours to Squaw or Kirkwood instead of flying to some other western resort that does not yet have the traffic problems. And I haven’t factored in yet the sometimes 8+ hour drive to Tahoe. At this point during busy periods, I would either pay the premium and stay on the hill or go somewhere else. I love Tahoe and when the conditions are good it is some of the best skiing in the world but the truth is you can’t ski when you are stuck in traffic or a long lift line.

Two thoughts:
1) The amount of available vacation housing in Tahoe is far greater than at any other time in history. Sure we've lost some dirtbag motels over the last two decades, but now every neighborhood is full of motels. The fucking STR issue is huge.
2) This is not just an Alterra problem. Traffic at Flatstar is just as bad, if not worse. We just don't talk about it because none of us ski there except Dookey, and he just works there. If I don't leave at the butt crack of dawn, I can't even get out of my neighborhood to get to West River St and 89.
Alterra really needs someplace to draw people away from Pali/AM with the number of passes sold. Elsewise they should use the solution they have used at other mountains...Ikon pass gets 5 days at Pali/AM and if you want more than that, buy the much more expensive Pali/AM pass.

I've gotta cool old 1960 Squaw Olympics map given out by Shell Oil that shows a bunch of these older ski areas that no longer exist.

Yikes!!! Pay no attention to the massive carbon footprint required for gaming today, let alone more of it....."The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size."

No means a local and moved to SF in 1990, skied SV/PT since 1992. Back then I did take the Bay Area Ski Bus a lot simply because you could get on the bus at 4:30AM, sleep until 8AM, have a Costco bagel, watch a Warren Miller film, and get dropped off right in front. Certainly part of the appeal was not waiting to exchange your Safeway voucher at the ticket office, they did that while you got changed and head straight for the chair. Beers and burgers on the bus back was a great added bonus. Now all everyone thinks of is getting to Olympic Valley in 3 hours or less and leaving earlier and earlier. I never ski on weekends anymore but I am lucky so can still do 3 hours and stay midweek as well. I think part of the solution starts not just in Truckee but at the point of origin specifically the Bay Area. Maybe more/better options for day trips on weekends might be another idea.

At 10:20pm tonight there was not traffic from Truckee to Olympic Valley...lol. I do a ski lease at the Village. I can only imagine the morning routine getting kids out the door with the stress of traffic.
Its definitely busier and earlier lineups for sure. Maybe it has some to do with Palisades having the largest ski team program in the country. At least that's what I've been told. If you think about it, the weekend ski teams consist of Shooting Stars (4 year olds), Mighty Mites (up to 9 years old), Junior Devo Race, Regular Devo Race, U9-however high it goes, Freestyle moguls, Big Mountain Team sport and Comp, snowboard, etc etc. All of this is mainly on the weekend where the teams department told me most of the team kids are coming from the Bay Area.
The holidays...New Years week, Presidents Week...like Powdork said, we jump ship and usually head to Telluride. SFO to Montrose direct in the winter and an easy drive to Telluride from there. Many SF families fly to Salt Lake or Jackson for their fix as it ends up taking less time and they can relax on the plane. However, I also know a ton of families that pull their kids on Fridays to do ski team at PTOV, Sugar Bowl and Northstar. I'm not as hardcore as people would think haha

The OVPSD is concerned about the traffic. Also about the proposed village.

Hey, it could be worse. I was once in a multi-hour traffic jam going to Albertville. And that was a 'normal' jam ...
- Lyon-Paris, France: February 1980. Noted as the longest traffic jam in the annals of congestion, a combination of hoards of winter vacationers returning to Paris and inclement weather caused a massive tie-up that stretched 109 miles long. Perhaps it would have been quicker had they simply skied back into the city.
