That's only 6 miles in from the outer edge of the barrier islands. That doesn't seem like much. I would think 100mph is still a real possibility at that distance.

Friends parents rode out a horrible hurricane in the early 2000s on Sanibel island. They survived amazingly but moved out of state aftet. Can't remember what hurricane that was but it was bad.

Had some other friends who left Florida after Andrew in 1992 vowing to never return. It took 20 years for them to forget the horror and devastation and now they are right back in the thick of it.

On the news last night they interviewed and old woman whi looked to be in her 80s who refused to evacuate because she likes where she lives. It was in Fort Myers. Thinking she won't be leaving ever again.

I've been to Florida. There is not enough money in the world to get me to live there.

I guess I'm looking at it wrong. Looked like center of the panhandle to me.. If that's an island south of the panhandle they're definitely going to see damage..

You'd think they would have taken in the chairs in anticipation of a 5'+ storm surge...
    Why, they want new ones.

Modern buildings usually can withstand the wind, even if they take serious water intrusion and damage. Surge and tornadoes flatten them.

This building was a jail that got hit by surge. Click image for larger version.

More of a peninsula between Port Charlotte and the Gulf. I think they are going to take a lot of damage. Forecast sustained winds of 70 mph with gusts to 120 there.

My late parents lived in Naples during that one, but locked up their condo and left for 3 weeks. Didn't call me or leave any mechanism for me to contact them while they went birdwatching in the Carolinas.

I've been to Florida. There is not enough money in the world to get me to live there.
I had to spend a lot of time down there taking care of my dementiaed mom after my dad passed, flying back and forth between SEA and Ft Myers, dealing with health care givers who ripped off all the family heirlooms and social workers who were the most understanding of the horror as well as a full time high pressure software job. I get it that it works for some people, but FL and most of the south is not for me.

Holy shit... the Englewood Beach cam is getting shitmixed right now. Looks looks like the northern eyewall is making landfall there.

I spent a winter living in Bradenton Beach '87-88. Glad I haven't lived in Florida since then. I drove past my old place in 2010. It's on stilts so it's got that going for it. It's been renumbered to 807. The place at 803/805 was a multistory mess back then built on the ground. I see that they've upgraded it.

Huge gust hit and the Englewood cam is now down

I predict the Siesta Key chairs get "disturbed" around 4:35PM ET.

Edit: Englewood cam is back up

Looks very tranquil at the moment. You'd think they would have moved those chairs somewhere else but what do I know.

Their Instagram guru figured it would be great content and could be used as a tax write-off? The chairs were getting old.
