I just listened to John Coltrane, A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle

    That was… interesting.

What a coincidence, your new neighbors are from Seattle.

Were you drinking a pumpkin spice latte while listening?

And in before Harry posts the appropriate picture.

Make fun of DSM all you want but don't be making fun of John Coltrane, and especially not A Love Supreme. Genius.

This. Wtaf? Coltrane A Love Supreme is an incredible album. F-ing genius is right.

That being said, is the live in Seattle album different? Educate me.

It was long before The Onion, and I don’t recall exactly, but back around that time some snarky rag (maybe National Lampoon) referred to him as Carlos “Onion Dip” Santana.

    I do clearly remember laughing.

I saw McLaughlin and Santana live once. I don't remember much about it --I was never a big fan of the Mahavishnu. Santana OTOH was/is a guitar god with an incredible sense for melody. Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock--incredible. Now where were we? Oh yeah, Coltrane.

McLaughlin was a guitar god with a uniquely brilliant sense of harmonies who studio pro J. Paige paid for lessons before anyone had ever heard of Santana... The best jazz guitarist Great Britain has produced to date [incl Holdsworth].

McLaughlin opened for Zappa many years ago at a concert in Toronto. Found out later that one of our classmates had also been at the concert and left after the opener thinking that he saw Frank and said Zappa sucked when pressed for a review. Face palm. Anyways, concerts at the old Maple Leafs Garden were terrible.

Zappa at Massey Hall was head and shoulders above the hockey rink concert.

When Zappa played at MLG did they do Louie Louie on the organ?

It’s one of (I think) two live recordings of the album.
Been a long time since I took the time to listen track by track, side by side, so can’t tell what is unique with the Seattle recording vs OG studio

Sounds possible but we're talking fifty years ago and the memory suffers after so many years. Mud shark and Flo and Eddie were the bomb at the MH concert.

Sat in the backyard yesterday and listened to that Coltrane album while swatting at all the fricking wasps. Coltrane good, wasps bad.

I have never heard the original so I couldn’t say what the difference is.
