Beverly Hills Cop #4 is in production.
https://variety.com/2022/film/news/b...el-1235379225/
Why?
I never saw 3 (and I don’t think a lot of people did; it only made money because of the foreign market and just barely).
According to Wikipedia, this film has been trying to get made since the mid-90s, with numerous starts and stops…

On the Fletch tip, I watched the trailer for that new Jon Hamm starring one and found it lackluster and uninspired.
I was also surprised to see that it got a theatrical release (it’s playing at several cineplexes in Reno).
Go figure.

Two that are better than the originals:
Night of the Living Dead 1990
The Thing 1982

Casablanca II - you know there' somebody trying to sell this.
While I would agree that 1982 version of The Thing was very good, I would hesitate to compare it to the original (also very good) because it was sooooo different. Critical element: a remake should not actually be a remake, it should depart significantly while still keeping the underlying premise.

In regards to The Thing From Another World (1951) and John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), I’mma be a pedantic putz and point out that, like the Fletch films, they are both based on a piece of literature, in this case the 1938 novella Who Goes There? written by John W. Campbell.
So, technically speaking, Carpenter’s version isn’t really a remake so much as a new interpretation of the source material.
Although, Carpemter is an unabashed Howard Hawks (director of the 1951 film) fanboy…

Then it wouldn’t really be a remake would it?
(You’ve just defined “reboot”, btw…)
But I could also make the argument that you can have a remake that’s a reboot and vice/versa (a reboot that’s a remake).
I think.
Shit, now I’m confused…
I’mma stick with Brodie’s breakdown (which is really Kevin Smith’s breakdown since he wrote the script):

“The great thing about genre directors in the 80s, they were thinking ‘What can we make?,’ not ‘What can we remake?’
We’re in a degenerate era today where all they think about is ‘What can we remake?,’ often titles from the 80s…”

The original Road House came out at a time of my life I remember fondly, and I couldn't agree with the sentiment more, but ... they did it anyway! Due to some extra special Amazon fuckery, though, it's apparently not going to get a theatrical release...
Gotta post this...
I was able to see Jeff Healey live a few times in a small club back then. That dude was one amazing mofo! Night Music also was very special. Only around for a couple years, but one of the best things that's ever been on television. The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

Now there's also The Fall Guy coming and another that I can't remember. Can't anyone create anything new anymore?

Although I wasn't stoked about the new Road House (I mean comon, why mess with greatness?), after seeing this Casey Neistat piece, I can't help but root for the director. Doug Liman's done some AMAZING freaking work in the past and on this one, he absolutely, positively got screwed over by Bezos. I felt his pain when he said he had to finally admit that he had lost. With that stunt Bezos pulled with the cowboy hat, walking a horse into a store, he has apparently achieved peak douche billionaire.
This reminds me of when AT&T/WB/HBO Max decided to stream Dune on day 1 of the release, completely effecting box office ticket sales and also not fitting into Denis Villeneuve's intent that the film was NOT meant for the small screen and should be viewed at your local cinema only. At least at first when the film's first released. Of course these decisions came AFTER he pretty much made the movie. Guy was rightfully pretty pissed.
Liman and Villeneuve going up against these dickhead billionaires and studios be like:

That looks like a cool offering, but like a lot of folks I let go of my record collection and turntable a long time ago now. Ain't going back, even for something like this, but it's nice to see Jeff Healey getting some love. Good timing on the release - hope it does well.
Caught a review of the new Road House on Fresh Air today, which touched on the release brouhaha. Now that they're out of the gate on streaming it occurred to me that they could let it build interest for a while, then have some kind of staged theatrical release when the summer movie season gets rolling. Lot of young dudes and MMA/fight fans out there - could be popular.
Buzz, that was a great vid of the Director giving his side. Thx for posting! The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

I can understand why they went direct to streaming instead of a theatrical release. It’s mediocre at best, plot has lots of holes, it’s not even cheesy in a good way. Connor McGregor is a terrible actor. Why Gyllenhall agreed to do this movie is a bit baffling

The Benjamins?

We made a big tub of popcorn and watched it Sunday afternoon. Not a great remake by any means - it's certainly no Piranha 3D** - but serviceable as mindless brain candy. About what I expected. I can tolerate that in the comfort of my own home, bail out if needed. Will probably never again sit in a theater for anything like that.

I was on a chairlift this past weekend with 3 others - 2 of which were raving about the remake of Roadhouse and the other didn't like it. Then, in all seriousness, the "outlier" guy said it was because the original was the greatest film of all time.
I kept my mouth shut.
