Auto paints or industrial coatings will offer much better long term protection than Rust-Oleum or oil. With the former, you'll likely never have to repaint it. Rust-Oleum( ext. oil)more than likely will have to be repainted down the line. If the chair will have no weather exposure(sun, water n such) the Rust-Oleum should be fine

Not much, but I do have access to a drill press and a Fuji Spray Semi Pro. Also, my wife works at a local art center that has all the welding tools for its welding classes. I hope to fabricate the support in one of those classes. If I don't feel confident doing this myself, I can always heed Djongo's advise.

    Thanks for the vote C.
Actually more of a suggestion than advice tho.

It's just that the best materials to apply to metal are typically very sticky, kinda hard to manage and the proper tools and technique can make or break it.
It all comes down to how pro do you want it to look?
With some patience and common sense, a mag can do a pretty fair job with rattlecans of rustoleum. But it'll lack durability and general appearance may suffer. On the other hand, some materials are way better, but a mofo to apply without janking something up.

Down your way, I'll defer to Tuco. He knows his shit, plainly.

    Cool!
No man, not questioning your capabilities, just whether you want to be repainting the chair every few years or not Hopefully that art center has spraybooth too?
I just hand painted this houseClick image for larger version.

Petit Marine Rustlok is a killer bare or even rusty metal primer.

Thanks for all of the good advise. I have purchased TCP Global epoxy primer/hardener, single stage acrylic urethane, and a high gloss urethane clear-coat. I'll post pics soon.

I found a fabricator for the support. Getting stoked

I finished sanding, priming and applying 5-6 coats of single stage acrylic urethane with a spray gun. I dry sanded with 800 and 1500 after 3 or 4 coats

I guess now I can either do a few things, or nothing at all. I can wet sand with 1500 and 2500.
I can apply a couple of coats of 4 to one high gloss urethane clear coat, and then I can buff/wax (like a wax applied to a car).

I was told by TCP that with a single stage AU, I didn't need to apply clear coat. If I do, am I just wasting time? I'm sure that it would look smoother, shinier and probably more professional.

Next step welding the ceiling mount swing! Still waiting on the 3/4X6" teak.

A humble suggestion: when that wimpy welded bushing breaks from the bending moment, put a phat spherical bearing up there.

IMHO, chairlift swings feel weird when they can't swing side-to-side, especially little light doubles that normally swing easily on the cable.

Plus, with the spherical, you can turn the thing to face other directions.

Dig the color and wooden seat, tho.

Well done mag! Way to bust a move and get it done.

I'm not a fan of blue but I've gotta say, that's a nice shade.

Those teak boards might outlast that pergola.

    Depends on what you're spraying.

What good fortune. Someone just gave me a Canyons/PCMR Red Pine Gondola bucket. The guy won it in an auction, but is from out of state doesn't want it. I am happy to reap the spoils of his good luck.
I guess I have a new project for this summer. There is a lot more to think about than refinishing the Solitude chair. I am thinking of doing something over the top in the "gondola" vein, but would really appreciate any creative suggestions.

I could see filling a gondola bucket with a poker table or a sauna element... assuming this is next to your house on your property.
