    Random travel questions

I didn’t see a thread with random travel questions, so here goes:

In early summer, for a trip to hike and explore, would you recommend the Canadian Rockies around Banff or the Alps (maybe a road trip from Geneva to Chamonix, then onward to Zermatt)? Which are more jaw dropping and stunning in person?

Are the castles of Ireland worth a visit?

If you want jaw dropping and stunning sites, look no further than Gatlinburg Tennessee.

    Ooh, I've got one:

Climbing Mt. Whitney and Mt. Russell soon. If all goes well, we will have 2 extra days to make it back to LA. Looking for something else cool to do on the way- doesn't have to be super outdoorsy but we will have backpacking gear. Already been to Death Valley and it's going to be 110. Sequoia? Mammoth? Palm Springs?

No, but you may know all the Thomas the train songs by heart at the end.

They're two, they're four, they're six, they're eight, shunting trucks and hauling freight...

    Sing it with me...

^^lol. I have an old-ass sienna with the rear overhead DVD player. No AV a hookups but luckily MIL and FIL kept all the Disney DVDs. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

nah, we did 750 miles without issue.

    Some pointers:
    • You said you had a DVD system, use it as much as the kiddo will pay attention to; throw out all "screen time" rules that you might normally have. The goal is to keep baby occupied by any means necessary.
    • Have a bag of new cheap toys/books, so you can pull out something new and shiny as baby gets bored, over and over.
    • Plan on regular stops, maybe every 2 hours, and plan on making stops when you have to, even if the last stop was 30 minutes ago. You're simply not going to be able to "power through".
    • Get up and get on the road crazy early (compared to baby's normal wake up time) and put baby in her car seat in her jammies. With any luck, baby will sleep for the first few hours while you churn out some miles.

^thanks! All good ideas and things we’ve thought about and planned for. Hopefully she isn’t so pissed about viewing the DVD screen through her mirror since it’s a rear facing seat. We have the bench/bed I built setup in back so mom can lounge while I drive. I’ll be sure to update this thread hourly on Friday and Saturday with horror stories, tender moments, and queries on stops through Indiana, Ohio, WV, and VA. Thanks SnowShow!

when we did a pretty long road trip with our young son, I remember it was an unforeseen challenge to shade him from the sun at various angles while on the road all day long. we had one of those things that stick to the window next to the child seat and pull down, but ended up having to rig something to handle back window since the baby’s seat was rear-facing.

been to the bow valley in June. Was Near peak river runoff, some trails not yet open, potential for record flooding depending on alignment of time. Bears might be really hungry.

Geneva to chamonix is a short drive.
