Why would I do anything to spin this incident?

If only there was something we could do...

Malcom Gladwell Revisionist History podcast has a 4 part series out about the gun debate. Good listen. Great critiques of both sides of the discussion.

The criticism of assault weapons bans (EP.3) and the discussion on the effect of improved trauma care on gun homicide rates (EP.4) were particular interesting…

Reading your link, and clicking on the Twitter links made my head spin.

Who are these people “arguing their culture and history were being ignored”? Pure blood Spanish descended from Cortez’ conquistadors? Are the natives supposed to ignore de Onate’s culture and history of butchery?

County Sheriff seemed none too pleased. He warned the Council this was likely and guess what…

The posts on the Twitter links in that article were stupidity-inducing.

Speaking of that punk, this is my View Right Now. Needed a drill bit so I stopped at the famous Ace Hardware down the road. Why is it famous? This is where Rittenhouse bought his gun.

It’s still where Rittenhouse got his gun. Your pedantic post makes his actions ever more heinous.

I can't find the link now, but I had seen one in an insta story that discussed how crappy treatment of indigenous and mixed-ancestry folks had led to a lot of those mixed-ancestry ignoring the indigenous part of their ancestry and identifying with the colonizing side. This, of course, makes them identify with said statue.

IME this is pretty true of northern New Mexico Hispanics. A lot of social value is given to the level of pure Spanish heritage of a given family, though not many have no Pueblo ancestry. The more Pueblo ancestry, the less regard. There are exceptions of course.

Public pushback, like against the Oñate statue, by the Indigenous seems to be a fairly recent development.

NYTimes looking at kids dying from guns; tl;dr is that the only two significant sources of increased childhood deaths recently in the US are drug exposure and guns, while most other causes (eg cars) have seen decreasing numbers:

    And in Wisconsin
Man with a gun demands to see Wisconsin governor, is arrested, and returns with rifle

MADISON, Wis. — A man with a handgun showed up at the Wisconsin Capitol demanding to see Gov. Tony Evers (D) on Wednesday, was arrested, posted bail, returned with a rifle and was taken into protective custody, according to police.
No, there’s no gun problem in the US.

You can buy guns at the hardware store? Here all they have are various expensive hose reels, a rack of plumbing fittings which magically never has the one you need, and a counter to get keys cut that requires a 15-minute waiting buy-in before someone will come and help you. No guns though, that just seems weird man.

I don't recall any of the chain hardware stores selling guns in VT, but there were plenty of independents that did. Not sure if any still do. There's still a gas station in South Burlington that sells guns. There were plenty of mom and pop convenience stores that used to. Gas, guns, a gallon of milk, and a loaf of bread.
