    Shot himself in the face

In case anyone missed it, immediately after winning his first stage in the Giro yesterday Biniam Girmay shot himself in the face with a champagne cork during the podium ceremony.

Apparently the injury to his eye forced him to abandon the race.

    Crazy story..

Well...I expecting one of the videos on Reddit this week where I saw someone put a bullet in the head. Instant death. This seems like a less severe accident

I think you’ll reconsider if you actually watch the video here:

Cork just shoots out as he’s removing the cage.

    For today’s stage, corks we’re pre-removed.

I'm sure as a 22-year-old you never did anything dumb. Especially just after a moment where you were the first person from your continent to win a major sporting event.

The SOP had been to partially remove the corks and leave the cage partially on. They don't explain that to new pros. Which is why basically this same even happened to MVDP a few years back, among others.

Girmay looked incredible this Giro. Super impressed with him (and with Wanty! in general). Excited to see him in future races.

He probably looks down the barrel to check if the gun is loaded too.

My gramps lost an eye to a champagne cork, back in the 60s. I never learned the details behind it beyond that, but, dude had a glass eye and that was why, as I was told from my youth. So, I've always been kind of a little bitch around champagne.

My inner Benny is showing I guess.

But c’mon, who unwraps a cork 8 inches from their eyeball.

I feel bad for the guy though.

Someone who didn't expect the cork to be pre-pulled as it was. I've opened thousands of cages, I've never seen on a cork pop cage release. Because they almost never do. This cork was partially pre-pulled and re-caged. Could reasonably catch many by surprise, especially when you're so damn stoked.

Definitely a potential lawsuit if that’s the case. If he has permanent eye damage that will likely be the end his racing career.

Nice to know we have a champagne bottle opening expert here on TGR, bartender?

A formative experience for me was watching a friend pull a cage at the service well, set the bottle on a slip mat, and the cork shoot across a busy dining room onto someone's $100 steak. I always keep a hand on the cork once the cage has been loosened.

A former coworker used to get jumpy anytime someone sat down a bottle of bubbles too hard with the cage still on. I'm sure he has a story.

Intermarche are having such a breakout season. The points relegation is starting to get interesting between the European and non-Euro WT teams. I'm starting to get worried about EF.
