Funny OP mentions golf - that would be one of the most difficult sports to rig by a long shot. Sometimes the difference of one or two shots can be like a half million dollars or more in prize money. To offset something like that would take an amount of action that would be flagged by sports books immediately. Sure, I guess some player could tank over and over again but the odds would quickly adjust and that's a good way to lose your tour card.

Agreed on golf fixing, but my point was that betting was so prevalent now that there is betting on golf. Seeing lines coming up on the screen in the middle of a round is nuts.

Well, there’s a pretty storied history of degenerate gambling on the golf course, so aside from technology I’d say nothing new to see here.

It’d be really hard to fix the overall outcome, but with newer betting markets, and down line gambling you could fix it so say, the round 3 3 ball guy who’s not gonna win anything but is the odds on favorite to win his 3 ball loses and your lay bet comes in

I mean, c'mon, just one or two shots can make a huge diff in prize money, who would want to risk that? LOL.

Yeah, it will be an issue.

Have a few (4) good buddies in their 50’s who are serious gamblers. 2-3 of them have a serious problem.

Had to lend money to one so he could buy groceries for his family.

Probably need to directly buy the groceries with the wife if there's a next time. Not that you need my advice.

I'm worried that thing #3 will go that route. He's shown some tendencies, has a history of stupid bets as a kid. He turns 18 this month

Wow, you're a really good friend. I've lent money to friends in the past for various cash flow reasons, but gambling it away is a tough one to wrap your head around since the addiction is literally money-based (kind of like giving alcohol to a boozer).

Dude is almost family. His mom and my dad went to middle school together; known him 50+ years. He’s semi-clean now, his kids are grown, and his wife left him. Love him, but he fucked up.

There's a subset of gambling addicts who subconsciously get more of a rush from losing than from winning.

Another tragic truth is the second paragraph here...

Makes me think of this line from Rounders...

In "Confessions of a Winning Poker Player," Jack King said, "Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career." It seems true to me, cause walking in here, I can hardly remember how I built my bankroll, but I can't stop thinking of how I lost it.

I can say that the possibility that gambling could corrupt all sports depends on many factors, including the legal framework, regulation and control by authorities, and morality and ethical values in society. Some countries have already introduced strict laws and regulations to regulate gambling and prevent its influence on sports, while in other countries these regulations are not as strict or nonexistent. Thus, developments may be different in different parts of the world. However, it is important to note that gambling and sports are two different things, and most people involved in sports seek competitive honesty and sportsmanship, not gambling winnings. Ideally, sports organizations and government agencies should continue to work to maintain this separation and fight any attempts to interfere with gambling in sports. But my opinion is that it is not very necessary nowadays, you can make a lot of money on bets as I do on one very good platform https://jokaroomvip.com/promotionsandbonuses how to get bonuses in Joka Room casino AU, with insanely high odds and instant withdrawal, you can bet on almost all games, and there is a huge number of gambling games.

For the most part, gambling does not corrupt sports, but it is, and always has been a part of sports, politics, pageantry, investing and life for thousands of years. While there may be temptation to throw a game, match, or other, egos and incentives are too great to make the temptation worth it.

As far as I know, Pete Rose never bet against himself, or his team. He deserves to be in the Hall, as he is the GOAT when it comes to effort, attitude and hustle.

Pretty sure Pete bet at least some Reds games but iirc he only bet them to win.

I'm old enough to remember when a pro sports team in Las Vegas would never be allowed because it was too close to the mobsters and casinos and the fear of corruption.

Now sports is saturated with gambling. But it will probably be NCAA basketball that has the first huge game fixing or point shaving scandal.

Although I know it is now legal, it still seems to shock me every time I notice sports gambling commercials/sponsorship during MLB last year.

I don't know anything about it, but with sports betting how does "the house" guarantee to always win? Seems like with the anything can happen it would not be as lucrative as casino and lotto. But maybe scale is so large?

How long will it take before gambling corrupts all sports?

Figured I’d bump this thread…NCAA baseball gambling scandal.

My buddy’s kid “is/was” a U of Cincinnati baseball recruit….he verbally committed early as a sophomore from CB East in Doylestown, PA. He’s now a 6’4 205lb. stud just finishing up his junior year.

Over the past few weeks, with a scandal looming….he visited Kentucky and started talking with some other SEC and ACC schools just in case something bad happened at UC.

Today he learned the UC head coach resigned….so he is rescinding his verbal commitment and is back in the open market. Will be interesting to see where he ends up….after thinking UC was the place he really wanted to be…..he really liked the coaching staff (now fired/resigned)

Weird….would of never thought Cincinnati would be involved in a NCAA baseball gambling scandal. Gotta be surreal for my buddy and his kid.

^oh, there is. The press just can’t/won’t say anything about it

Can’t: not enough definitive evidence due to sophistication or protection of the evidence

Won’t: don’t shit where you eat mentality

Sports betting is as old as organized sports. Maybe not before the ancient Greeks but at least that far back.

Sure...but...its just way easier now if you have a cell phone or live outside of Vegas, AC, etc. Used to have to find a bookie. I know a guy who bets on cricket games online sometimes. He's got a problem.

Mass media saturation is a bit different than in olden times but I guess we'd have to ask the Old Goat for clarification.
