Random question that this thread has made me aware of - how many of you are writing down your bike serial numbers? I'm not. But I'll probably start this weekend!

Most of the time if you buy it new the paperwork will have the number on it somewhere, or the shop will have it. Any used bike I take the serial number and run in through the bike finder websites to make sure it hasn't been reported stolen, so then I have it written down.

Yeah, all of my bikes were bought at a store that records the serial number on the receipt. By some chance my sister bought the kids bike at that same store. Phew.

I have spreadsheets of serial numbers….
Rocky Mountain now uses a QR code to link you to the serial number.

I use bikeindex.org. Pretty easy to just put all your bike info there. Would be nice if it was pushed more by the bike industry, so it could become sort of like a carfax for bikes, at least to verify ownership.

I know, and I was trying to bring another movie into it, but I got the quote wrong (second part I made up). Epic fail. I know, take a lap. And I'll lighten up...and yes, bike recovery is fantastic. I hate bike thieves.

Damn! Nice work. Especially liked the long way around the block approach. I recovered a bike from a thief last year, great feeling.

Generally, these people aren't that smart - I found mine via Instagram. The thief tagged the bike brand I work for on IG with an account that had his full name on it. It was my personal bike and I immediately recognized it. Idiot.

A lesson from the school of hard knocks.
Go through your house once a year and lay all of your good stuff out and take a walk through video of it. After a house fire, or theft, showing that your bikes and skis were worth more than your car may raise red flags to cops and or insurance. Having that video makes it a lot easier when your putting together the list of things that are gone.

This is a good practice and I’m a few years (and maybe ~$15k value) overdue for a walk thru.
