Still snowing in Portillo, where a lull in the weather permitted some kind of photo shoot today

We were there last Dec. 7-9:

https://www.firsttracksonline.com/bo...10-2021.14458/
Those days in Cochamo were the nicest weather we have experienced in Patagonia.
We were in the same region Dec. 2017 and never got on the Futaleufu River as it was at 3x maximum level for rafting. That trip started with an unscheduled night in Palena due to a landslide blocking the road: https://www.firsttracksonline.com/bo...23-2017.12546/. We had planned to do the Cochamo Valley in 2017, but the weather delayed our return to Puerto Montt from Futaleufu: https://www.firsttracksonline.com/bo...c-28-31.12554/
On Dec. 3, 2021 we had lunch in Santiago with CaseyE:
In Santiago we were with a group assembled for a charter flight to Punta Arenas, then out over the ocean east of the Falklands for the Dec. 4 total solar eclipse: https://www.firsttracksonline.com/bo...-4-2021.14454/ We were on a guided tour in San Pedro de Atacama Dec. 28 - Dec. 1. !!!!!
The hike from Cochamo through to the Rio manso along lago vidal gormaz is amazing if you can swing the argentine border crossing. I spent 5 days along there in 2016. It is beautiful country if it works with the stupidity of todays international travel restrictions(or if you don't care, the aduana at that 'outpost' love gringos to practice english with). Plus, the argentines on that side of the country don't give a care for their government across the whole country

After a 3 year hiatus, we are going back to Chile and Argentina in August. Woo hoo!
We have a reservation at Portillo from 2019 that we just kept rolling forward and we'll use that, hopefully ski the Super C and drink Pisco sours. And all the other things one does at Portillo.
Then we fly to Puerto Montt where friends from Argentina will meet us and drive to Bariloche for a few days at Cerro Catedral, up to San Martin de Los Andes (a wonderful place) for a few days at Chapelco and then back down La Ruta de Siete Lagos to Villa Angostura to ski at Cerro Bayo.
Really looking forward to it!

That sounds like an incredible trip. There's nothing like skiing upside-down with the condors.

LATAM Ski Bag policy?
Sooo... the wife and I are headed to Chile in August and our return flight (purchased through Delta) is code-shared through LATAM to LAX. LATAM's official policy appears to permit 1 pair of skis. Anyone have any experience with this airline checking multiple pairs of skis in a single bag?

I know today would have been awesome in the mountains, but I am sure the lure to ski off the bunny runs would have been too tempting, and having encountered too many submerged rocks in my years here, I passed. But the sunset from Santiago was gorgeous.

The Other Side of Things
It didn't really hit me until the first time I saw the Southern Cross while lying in a hammock with a glass of rum & star fruit juice in my hand. Holy fuck, same planet and a totally different sky! Couldn't wait to get back down there and ski. Turned out to be even more mind bending than expected. Getting buzzed by a condor on the Roca Jack was worth every penny it cost, which was only a fraction of a heli trip to Canada.
