These would have caused some trouble for the Manantiales run.

Strange thing is I haven’t seen so many fractures on such wimpy terrain. Plus rocks. Bloody wind. No lifts open above Alpha, one run down. We shall see what the crew makes of all that raw material over the next couple days. Pretty slack so far..

Flying south with skis is easy. Flying north not so much. We were in the same boat a few years back, and because latam was our first boarding in SCL, they did not honor the NA airlines offer for ski inclusion. was something like 250 per ski bag. Bring a set to sell, less hassle

La Parva opened one run per lift on the 3 upper pomas. Being the most susceptible to wind damage of the 3 ski areas near Santiago, several upper runs have a bare patch or two, and the 3 upper chairs are not running.

The groomers were superb, and while the off piste was mostly wind crust, there were good wind pack lines along some ridges. Rocks will appear if no more snow falls.

What was going to be 1-5cm at dawn, became 10cm by 9:30am and it sort of cleared up. “White wind” or ventiscas are keeping all upper lifts closed

Anyone thinking of driving the 40 switchbacks up to the 3 Valleys should take note of the “inconveniences” involved.

These are primarily related to touristic traffic, involving buses, vans, delivery trucks, skiers, and families getting some fresh air, out for a drive. Parque Farellones and other attractions on the road to Valle Nevado are increasingly overwhelmed. Any amount of snow on the road prompts the inexperienced to put chains on, often in the middle of the road, and with great difficulty. The traffic backs up and everybody gets nervous.

So a trip up on a weekend or holiday can end up being a nightmare. For example, after the brief but furious storm of Friday last week, a friend took 9 hours to get up to VN. My son took 4 hours to get down to Stgo on Sunday. I took 80 minutes at 10pm the day it snowed, after the mayhem.

Much better to stay up on the hill and not worry about all that on a pow day. OR only travel at night.

Def everywhere seems more like this. The most important kit for the skier is vehicle sleeping, allowing you to bypass/ignore/ not partake in this mayhem.

These folks didn’t heed the warning, and now 250 vehicles are stranded around Paso los Libertadores. Hotel Portillo is keeping them fed.

In response to my prior criticism of the 3V road fiasco, I offer this miracle of maintenance and, apparently, civic behavior

2,000m vertical on that route in one of the bigger storms of the past few years, and it appears “expedito”. Kudos.

Jesus, I spent many a night in our Nissan Patrol on that road. Sheer terror on a weekend. It’s nice to get stuck up there though. Thanks for the pics
