I was lucky enough to have Casey drive me up from Santiago, feed me some traditional Chilean cuisine, and give a powder day tour all over La Parva, in September 2015 after sending him a DM. Gotta say it was, 10/10 would recommend!

    Thanks again for the memories!!!

Made it down to TDP for some hiking afterwards which was a bucket list experience as well.

So that first snowfall in the central zone will evaporate before the next snowfall

The April weather bulletin is out, with about the same winter forecast (la Niña, declining). They do note, though:

    "Further south, the record shows
very rainy MJJ quarters, in areas
like Temuco or Puerto Montt. The amount of
years in which MJJ was rainy or below normal
is very similar. Therefore, the right panel of
Figure 4 shows the frequency of years with
La Niña in which MJJ was rainy.

You can see that in the central zone it is very
rare that this happens, 20 or 30% of
times, that is, 10 MJJ with the presence
of La Niña, only in 2 or 3 does it end with
    blue numbers in precipitation.
In the south of the country the picture is different.
MJJs with La Niña can be as dry
as rainy. Frequency indicates 50% or
even 60% of MJJ that are rainy. For
example, in Osorno, 6 of 12 MJJ with La Niña were rainy.

So the clear sign of a further condition
dry than normal under the influence of La
Niña is in the central zone of the country, but
this is lost towards the south. arriving
even to be more frequent that it is rainy
    in some sectors of Aysén."

So May could be rainier than normal in the south, as they predict:

But May/June/July will be dryer than normal, at least south to Pto Montt:

Our man in the field, though, is getting his in Corralco today

So my advice to anyone planning a trip, would be to consider from Maule south as the focus.

Meanwhile, offshore Los Vilos and Valparaiso gets a shake up. Weird I didn’t feel any of the 5+ Richter shakes the last 24 hrs.

I am super curious about Puerto Montt.
Hiking biking fishing sort of stuff.
Puerto Montt is a major adventure destination, with a wide variety of activities available. While Puerto Montt as such has few attractions (good seafood though), Puerto Varas, a short drive away on the Llanquihue Lake, is more of a tourist town.

    Here are some nearby destinations:

The "Chilean Yosemite", Valle Cochamo, with trekking and climbing galore: https://cochamo.com/

The huge Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales, centered around the Todos los Santos lake, and with almost no roads, and a multitude of possibilities, including the Osorno (small ski area), Puntiagudo and Tronador volcanos, and access to Argentina via boats and walks (or horseback). This is run by Conaf (national forestry and parks service). I just noticed their website https://www.conaf.cl/parques/parque-...perez-rosales/ says "Cerrado temporalmente el ascenso hacia la cumbre del volcán Osorno desde el 1/2/2022, debido a una visible y evidente pérdida del manto de nieve, lo que genera el desprendimiento de rocas y rodados."

Parque Nacional Alerce Andino https://www.conaf.cl/parques/parque-...alerce-andino/ is a small park with ancient Alerce forests and multiple lakes, just south of Puerto Montt.

Volcán Chacabuco, which blew in 2015, hunkers over the ports. A route here: https://www.andeshandbook.org/montan...al/descripcion

The wild Pacffic coast. Cool place to stay here: https://hotelmarimari.com/esp/

    A bit further away are:

Rio Puelo, which snakes south east to Argentina (but is not connected by road yet), and has boating trekking, fishing etc. A cool place to stay in a private park is http://parquetaguatagua.cl/eng-home#Home

The island of Chiloe with its picturesque old towns on the water, wooden churches, and 300 or so varieties of potatoes.

The Seno de Reloncavi and Golfo de Ancud, which are relatively protected from the Pacific, are good sailing destinations.

I understand there is now a bike path which follows the road around the Llanquihue Lake.

Lots of young people are leaving Santiago to set up in Puerto Varas and environs.

Looking for "that" road to take you close to your goal? The government has this Google Earth based map with all public roads, and you can zoom in, click on the road in question and see what kind of surface it has, length, etc. Look here:

    https://sitministerial.maps.arcgis.c...cbce97ff89d74c

The Rio Palena road, for example, ends here, not too far from Argentina and El Bolson:

Sorry, not Chile, but I finally got back to Canada to see family for a few weeks, so Shoeshine and the dive it was on second to last day of the season.

Fiftieth anniversary of my first plunge into the dive, also in May. Shitty “recreational” rental gear and improvised clothing to boot…
Kind of a pilgrimage for me.

    Ski Chile 2022

    Yup, nada que decir.

    Maule rocks. Delirium galore.

Great to see, got more snow on the horizon?

Some northern hemisphere “Dead Man’s flats” etc scapes, contraponiéndose con lMaule.

What Corralco looks like after their recent “more than generous” snowfalls

    https://fb.watch/debgc3DmQk/

And Osorno is looking icy on the way up.

June will probably see Corralco beating El Colorado for the earliest opening day.

Now looking up for the central zone.

Maybe they will start making snow now that the cold is kicking in, although with the ongoing drought, there may also be water shortages or gov’t restrictions.

    Rationing is still being discussed.

It's been a while since Portillo has had a forecast like that. I hope they can have an early opening in June--they certainly need the revenue. They have had my deposit for 3 years. Fingers crossed that this is the year.

You got me day dreaming about that trip to Protillo for a week of hello skiing in late august. I could do it this year. It could make my decade.

You know. As wierd as my life. I have the resources to do this easy. You know. Fuck the future. I can dump about 10 grand. Easy. You guys wanna help me have fun? I’m serious cuz around is unfun. I want some hello skiing where I am coddled. Because honestly I’m not in very good shape. My brain can write checks my body can’t cash

But I can still have fun. And yea. I will ski like a phyco. On my death bed

I'm looking into travelling down to Chile in September for 2 weeks to Ski some volcanoes around Pucon. Does anyone have any experience planning a similar trip? We are only planning on bringing touring gear and not going with any guided companies. We would be flying from the U.S.
