Quite the sinkhole you have down your way. Copper mine related? Francisco d'aconia up to his old tricks again?

Ha! Lots of real characters chopping up the landscape in that neck of the Andes. Could be water extraction and / or mining. Currently under investigation, and the hole is expanding.

Cooler weather and good chance of flurries this weekend. Much needed.

    Ski Chile 2022

Portillo got 27 cm and the 3 Valleys about 15-20cm. La Parva yesterday:

The wind picked up Sunday and crusted up most of the pow from Saturday, leaving it best for snowboarders, but the groomers were groovy

A couple tracks could be seen in the Cerro La Parva bowl.

Valle Nevados 3 Puntas lift in the middle distance, lot of tracks in there

The snow park is shaping up, and shaking it up with their boom box

If in need, a cross is always handy nearby in these parts

I did manage a few turns low down at the end of the day

If the lake is going to freeze this season, wouldn’t it already be frozen by now?

Yes. When I first went 15 years ago the lake was frozen. I went back several more times and I only recall seeing it frozen once more, and not lately.

They did put in a walkway along that cliff band so you can get back from Lake Run.

Been years since I last saw the lake completely frozen. Fewer cloudy/snowy/cold days in the winter leaves it exposed to fierce sunshine. Used to be a given that you could ski back from the lake run on the frozen lake. No longer….

We've been there six times and return on Saturday for the seventh. I've never seen the Lake frozen all the way across.
Looking forward to spending mornings on the travesia off the Roca Jack and afternoons doing Lake Run laps. Try to hit the Super C once.
Ahh, yes, life at Portillo is good.

Thanks all! Still contemplating a possible storm chase.

Jumbo, I hope you have a great trip!

There are a few more hoops to jump through with Covid in terms of entry, but expect everything to go smoothly.
After Portillo, we are flying south to Puerto Montt, where a friend from Bariloche will pick us up and we will drive into Argentina. A few days at Cerro Catedral, then San Martin de Los Andes to ski at Chapelco and then a couple of days at Cerro Bayo in Villa Angostura.
Total of here weeks and four ski areas.
    That should work quite well.

As a small aside, please note it is "jummo" not "Jumbo" and it's not capitalized as I'm not that important.
    Thank you.
This is a panorama from the top of the Super C from the last time we were there.

It took me 48 hours to get my entry approved. First had to submit photo of passport, then wait overnight. Then submit photo of vaccination card and another overnight wait for approval.

Looks like some healthy storms rolling in starting Sunday night...

I don't think they are still requiring the mobility pass to enter Chile anymore. However, it is supposedly needed for hotels and public transportation within Chile, but I have heard no one is really checking. I did mine last week just in case.

Enjoy! Miss this area of Argentina. Such a treat to be there. Been a decade. I will return. In the mean time soak in the fun.

This bit forecast for next few days may be the last hurrah for this winter in the central zone.

The south, however, will get walloped…
