Today was cloudy but relatively calm. The upper pomas and Las Vegas opened early, but it was mostly skied off from the hordas of kids, learning to ski pow. The teams and clubs have taken a cue from the international ski teams, and get out on the lower lifts at 8 am, ready to load up on the chair when it opens.
When in doubt, follow the poma line
The “Hollywood face”, although detonated earlier, slumped in a rude way at noon, and the whole Barros Negros area closed.

Las Águilas opened today, and some pockets were still skiable.
With the barometer plunging and wind picking up, it didn’t look too promising, but the sun came out briefly.
My oldest, the neurologist, figured it was a good day for boarding
Yours truly
Meanwhile my youngest, the AI guy,
Who got his girlfriend into the pow for the first time
And was quick to rescue her at the bottom
The flat light didn’t discourage the locals

This front, which has started snowing lightly, is going to have a fast and furious stage around dawn tomorrow.
And the freezing level will drop to 1,000m. Could snow til Friday morning, then again Sunday.
Good to see Melipeuco on the backcountry scene, with a course on V Sollipulli

Ski Chile 2022
Road to 3 Valleys closed, no electricity. Snowing in many of the towns of the Central Valley. Just like the good old days.
Portillo will probably end up getting close to 2 meters in one week,
From Agreste in Lonquimay, where the snow line is at historic lows

Now isn’t this a pretty sight
With that, the base is built. Skiing should be good thru Sept.
My 4Runner attests to the depth, in spite of some rude winds.

Thanks for the info and photos Casey! Looks like a great winter in Chile. I'm headed to Portillo for a week of skiing in late August. While I've visited Chile several times in the summer, this is my first visit in winter. Any specific insight you have on Portillo would be much appreciated.

The other side of the low cold snowfalls and frosts
https://www.emol.com/noticias/Nacion...s-heladas.html
Help is in the way to 8,000 rural families isolated or severely affected, such as Alto Bio Bio, in 10 regions of Chile, from Atacama to Los Ríos.
But the dry and the heat are back. Freezing levels to be up to 3,900m for the next 5 days in the central zone, while the south gets wet snow.

Now the groomers are coming into their own
Las Vegas
And huckers take off with more confidence
That pitch has ‘lanched twice this year.
And hopefully this will be the last slide on the Barros Negros cirque
The Cerro La Parva chutes are looking good (left), with some more interesting ones further east on El Pintor, to the right.

Ski Chile 2022
Meanwhile, the Portillo international road is still closed. Trucks are piling up on both sides of the divide, so even when they open, the road will be a slow mo mess.

A 3 phase opening is planned, with no date yet defined for tourism, last in the line.
As can be seen scrolling down the page, most intl passes to Argentina are closed.Last edited by Casey E; 07-20-2022 at 06:58 AM.

ive been over that pass right when it reopened after an extended snow closure -- the miles long line of trucks you have to maneuver around while trying to get to the ski area is mind boggling

Here is where the precipitation to date stands (which reflects snow depths at each latitude)
The deficits are all lower now, and the south is close to normal.
Snow depth was already better than 2021 at the beginning of July, but still below normal.
The predictions remain below normal. From https://climatologia.meteochile.gob....cas-202206.pdf
La Niña continues
They are now considering the very rare case of 3 la Niña summers in a row. From a historical perspective, 2 have happened, but not 3.
