I live on a golf course, but don't golf. Perhaps I should start. But I'm afraid the first swing would lead to a significant back injury.

Friend of mine that is a skier/biker/climber got talked into entering a four man team for a charity golf tournament. He fucked up his back swinging clubs and was out of activity for a couple of months after.

Not tempted to try golf but positive this would be the result if I did.

Heal up WRG. Sounds like an epic ordeal.

    Maggots in Grand Junction...help please.

Golf addiction, like biking and skiing addictions, can lead to irrational life choices and expenditures. But, like skiing, you can get hooked on continually working on improving.

Slowing tempo and not swinging for the fences can help avoid injuries….but then there’s John Daly:

I golfed quite a bit in my 20s until I had my first...and last...ace. I realized in that moment that I would never swing a club that well ever again. Basically quit golf after that.

I have a very similar story about fly fishing.
I drove cross country with a a friend who was crazy for fly fishing. He regaled me with stories about how hard it was, how serene it was, how you had to read the hatches and the water. And how it took a lifetime to truly master.
We hiked 9 miles into Glacier, I cast my first line, and in about two hours caught 6 trout.
I realized then that it would never be like this again, so that was the end of that. I did bring white wine, garlic, butter, salt, and pepper, and that was goddamn delicious.

First and only time I ever went fly fishing was cold and miserable. Didn't catch anything other than the bushes (which I usually didn't realize had ripped my fly off for a few casts) many times. Never again.

I always figured I'd have time for golf when I'm dead.
edit: I just remembered enjoying nutmeg choi's awesome golf TR's in absolutely amazing places and thinking what an entirely civilized way to ruin a nice walk

When I was a kid, I had zero patience for the game. Then for years when coworkers or friends invited me to go, my response, "I'm not old enough for golf...yet." (Not to mention the time vs going for a ride.) It's basically hiking 4-10km's after a stupid ball. Then there's betting....

That golfing shit is dangerous! I’ll stick to skiing solo in shit faceted Montana snowpack, much safer.

Golf can be fun with the right mindset and the right crew.

The main problem is all the anti-fun people around you at the golf course. I think they're called "course marshals" and they want you to do lame shit like keep all four wheels of the golf cart on the ground.

My university had a nine hole “executive” course that students could play for like five bucks. We used to go play beer-a-hole golf during the spring. Can’t say I recommend doing that right before a calculus final, but otherwise a great way to enjoy the sport

Once I broke my back I can’t really play golf anymore. Way harder on the back than skiing or biking.

Don't get me wrong - I could have a *really* good time on a golf course... but I sure as fuck wouldn't actually be golfing.

Welp, finally got the results. Labrum tear that broke off a piece of bone. Need a CT now. Possible invasive surgery so I am guessing plates/screws to reattach broken off piece of bone. Any my buddy was wrenching on this thing for like 15 minutes on the trail LOLOL. No wonder it hurt so bad.....and still fucking hurts. I'll see a trail in 6 months. Fuck me.
