Easy entry to anything seems to attract the lowest common denominator of ignorant assholes. And side by sides definitely have a lower barrier to entry into douchebagville than a jeep does. They're not just cheaper, they are built to go fast and are super capable right from the factory. Just throw down $20k, load the cooler up with natty ice and whiteclaw, and go raise hell. Not much different from e-bikes, really. No skill or fitness needed, just get out there and shred. Those hikers will dive out of your way. Also no different from accessibility to the outdoors in general. A killer spot stays pristine and under the radar for years as people who found it on their own took care and protected it. Then it gets blown up for likes on social media. And the masses who show up next? Well that looks like a great place to take a shit.
I think lack of education and accountability to their user group as part of the price of entry is the big problem. The average jeeper "grew up" wheeling with others who taught them the ropes, has built up their own rigs, and has probably seen a bunch of areas shut down by irresponsible use. It helps that their jeeps aren't built for speed so much even if they are very capable. As a group they just have a whole different attitude than the side by side owners.

It doesn’t hurt that Utah has bent over backwards to accommodate SxSs and all the associated douchebaggery.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

SxSs are definitely in the same category of douchebag enabling, but they are even worse than mopeds. As a dirt biker I can confidently say that most of us hate them with as passion. They have totally destroyed long-enjoyed places in just a few years.
Baja is the biggest tragedy of all. Many ranchers that permitted motos' passage and even trail building for decades have put up gates in the last 5 years. Routes that we've enjoyed since the 80s are now closed to us thanks to giant groups of assholes driving SxSs through like they think they are in the 1000.
I randomly ended up in Moab twice during the Jeep week back in my climbing days. That was way before Moab blew up so it was more of a funny spectacle than a real bother. I didn't understand the fascination with trying to get your Jeep over giant rocks at walking speed then and i haven't learned to appreciate it any more since.ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.

I was there last June, I found good camping a little north on the road to Green River. Found some trails up there and it was easy to just jet down to Moab for a day, enjoy then get out. Summers are definitely much more crowed than years past.

so I"m pretty interested in trying this back door approach but I need some guidance
I know where the back door is and I'm an #overlander
my questions are
should I buy another set of traction boards before going? having four is better than two I imagine? especially if one is damaged I'll have at least two others
Astrolube or KY in the condiment jugs?
Do you think it's safe to do? what protection do I need?
if I need to stop and have a snack do you know a time to take a break
if I'm deflated what kind of air compressor should I buy to get back up

You already know the answer. Make sure you get some shackles too, powdercoated to match your condiment jugs obviously.
At least one jug of each
I'd recommend a .45 in case of grizzly bears as well as a shotgun in case you need to intimidate any Federales at the border
Anywhere with a flat rock and a dramatic view so that you can do yoga poses for your Instagram story. Otherwise, stop at the largest boulder you can find, try to get your rig as flexed out as possible, and make a tik tok video
Viagra or Cialis, whatever works best for you

Very. Moab's kinda over to me anymore. Extreme ends of the season or sniping in for a warm day in the off season is good. Other than that, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Dude do yourself a favor, take toast's advice and head to Fruita/Grand Junction. Plenty of good trail over there without the hype. I mean, avoid 18 rd. of course, you won't be missing much there. Don't forget Palisade Rim though, and hit up the brewery after. There's nothing better than sliding down snow, and flying through the air

Fruita/GJ next trip. Gonna minimize the climbing with shuttling as I'm still on low HR for now getting past this long covid shit. Plenty of off the beaten path BLM and I'm getting there tomorrow afternoon. Most of the Jeepers probably arrive on Friday.

Camping in Moab during Jeep Safari Week?
Yup and yup. Everyone always mentions how awesome it must be to be so close to Moab, but I hardly ever go anymore. But I did have a killer weekend right before thanksgiving this year. Daytime highs were only 50, but we had a campsite right in town and it was barely busy at all.
Looking forward to a weekend in Palisade at the end of the month.

moab was sooooo coool twenty years ago
yeah when I got off the greyhound bus in breckenridge twenty something years ago it was a fuck ton cooler too
goto moab have fun
if you misanthropes don't like people that much I have a long list of solid camping places in moab and a boat load of other towns out west where you can pound one out standing next to your #goto's rig with no one around to see you
and junciton fruita? huh that's where all the whiney people who think moab sucks go to ride bikes
and PS the top of palisade plunge start is under 3 or 4 ft of snow bring your rock skis

Fuck off Fred. I wandered into Moab in the fall of 1984 and spent 2 weeks camping in Arches and eating shrooms after moving out from Indiana, mind blown! The birds sounded very funny to me.
No one had ever heard of a Mountain Bike...... not really but you get the picture.
Moab was done as soon as Outside started pimping the place. Had some great times but I am on the same page as Beater, shoulder season stealth missions only.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.
